  • Rhetorical Analysis Of Discover Your House By Dave Barry

his brilliance is embodied by his use of sarcasm to belittle certain issues. Amidst clearly stated belief, Barry serves sarcasm to downplay and mock otherwise serious issues in America. Wikipedia says that: “Sarcasm is stating the opposite of an intended meaning especially in order to sneeringly jest or mock a person, situation or thing.” Barry employs sarcasm perfectly, sneeringly jesting blatant differences between Americans and foreigners in paragraph 6 by advising them to: “try to blend in with the native population by: 1) weighing as little as possible; 2) smoking cigarettes; 3) not tipping; 4) Not standing around frowning in total bafflement at street maps the size of tennis courts; 5) and not asking the tour guide questions like: ‘Does this museum have a bigger Mona Lisa?’ ” Without having to use LOL at the end of this example to indicate humor, Barry sarcastically mocks American stereotypes – that are harmful in nature – and entertains every reader. He understands that while the first tip may come as a blow to some, they’ll laugh at it because it is a benign jest at Americans. Will they be offended by they overt puns? No, of course not - they will be too busy laughing. Through a mere five points of satire, Barry depicts why Americans may not enjoy their vacation: it is they who are foreign to the putative ‘foreigners.’ Barry gracefully manifests his intentions while dodging the effects of his inflammatory statements. Even while jesting at obesity, comic prose…
