    Blanche was a widow but notoriously know for her promiscuous ways. Mark Cherry was a writer for the Golden Girls as well as a more recent show, Desperate Housewives in which Cherry used Blanche as the inspiration for the character Gabrielle, which was portrayed by Eva Longoria. Rose Nylund was portrayed by Betty White. The character migrated from a town in Minnesota called Saint Olaf. Rose was considered the blonde bimbo of the show, but she was extremely innocent, naïve and always believed that everyone had the best intention. Rose had a love for her home town, Saint Olaf and her deep Norwegian roots, always referencing home and her husband who passed away of a heart attack during sexual intercourse. Sophia Petrillo portrayed by Estelle Getty was the sharp tongue Sicilian mother. She lived in a nursing home that burnt down, called Shady Pines. After that incident she moved in with the three women, her biggest fear was going back into a nursing home. Sophia, being Italian, was the character that always said what was on her mind. She was the oldest in the house, and kept everyone on their toes with her quick witted humor. Sophia was the character that stuck up for the underdog. She defended a lot of the gay characters that appeared on the show, which was a head of its time. Bea Arthur who portrayed Dorothy Zbormak, was the daughter of Sophia Petrillo.
