The museum began as J. Paul Getty’s private collection of art and antiquities. This was the basis of the museum and was located within J. Paul Getty’s house in 1954. Shortly after a museum wing was added onto the house along with a replica of an Italian villa meant to hold the collection. However, the museum did not open to the public until December 16, 1997. (cite) The museum also houses the large Central Garden designed by Robert Irwin. The Museum’s collection at the Center includes outdoor sculpture on terraces and in gardens. J. Paul Getty believed art was an enlightening influence and wanted to make it available to the public for education and enjoyment. Although the original site in Malibu was built in 1945, the Los Angeles site was not built until 1968. The museum became one of Los Angeles’ cultural landmarks. The Getty Center’s change has stemmed from three main factors; history, environment, and challenges. The J. Paul Getty center has grown from a small collection to over four different parts. With such a high amount of air pollution in Los Angeles the museum had to start using filtration systems to keep the art work safe from dust. One of the biggest challenges The Getty has had to face is with money. After investment losses they had to cut their budget for this year and are hoping that it will be a solution to the problem. The Getty has had to face many different challenges and because of this has changed rapidly over time. Luckily they have been able to overcome these challenges to keep the museum going strong. Hopefully the museum will continue going on strong and will be able to withstand time even longer for many more generations to
