Located in the heart of Lake Jackson Is a “hidden gem” that every resident in the Brazoria County area should visit, at least once. The Lake Jackson Historical Museum is a great way to educate yourself on the rich history of Lake Jackson. I have lived here for five years, and had no knowledge this incredible place existed in the area.
Who would have thought Lake Jackson has so much interesting history? Like the fact that most of Lake Jackson sits on an old sugar plantation by the late Abner Jackson, hence the name. Due to my unpredictable work schedule I had to forgo the planned visit. I was slightly apprehensive about this, because I wanted a personal tour, which they offer on planned visits only. After signing the guest book in the front foyer of the museum, I was greeted by a young, knowledgeable volunteer who was more than happy to show me around. It was unusually slow that day so I had the volunteer’s undivided attention, as she did mine. She ushered me through answering every question and explaining each section in greater detail. The museum offers a few hands on exhibits where people can visit the ghost of Major Abner Jackson, learn how This Way and That Way Street acquired its name, and a virtual plane where visitors can fly the Windecker Eagle airplane …show more content…
Unfortunately, it being a cold, rainy day the visit was cut short. The volunteer on site needed to close due to the flooding in that area. I was crushed I would not be able to continue my fun, educational journey in Lake Jackson history until the first Saturday of next month. The volunteer talked a little about the Plantation before my departure to put my mind at ease. The volunteer, observing my disappointment, offered to reserve a guided tour of the Plantation on the following open date.
