Throughout the first chapter, O' Brien repetitively uses the word “carried.” In the beginning when O' Brien uses the word “carried” it to refers to the taking of the object from one place to another and the holding of the physical items. The soldiers “carried M-14s and CAR-15s and Swedish Ks and grease guns and captured AK-47s and Chi-Coms and RPGs and Simonov carbines and black market Uzis and .38-caliber Smith & Wesson handguns and 66 mm LAWs and shotguns and silencers and blackjacks and bayonets and C-4 plastic explosives” (7). The listing of the items the men carried seems to be breath taking such that the reader feels exhausted after reading this, since there are no pauses the reader can take. It seems that the author is trying to demonstrate the exhaustion the soldiers had felt by listing the items that seem never ending as if to draw a picture that the soldiers are carrying their life's security on their back, since the weapons are a survival tool that helps the men stay alive. However, it is a burden as well in that the men can die because the weight can slow them down and make them vulnerable. The intangible items also had an effect on the soldier.
