    Transitioning from one phase of life into another inevitably involves overcoming a range of obstacles and difficulties, but in the end ultimately results in positive growth for the individual. This colours who and what we are and how we fit into the world. The central characters within The Simple Gift overcome personal obstacles to their happiness in order to develop into more independent and fulfilled individuals. Benderat transforms the protagonist Billy Luckett, who overcomes isolation and alienation in order to achieve independence. As he transitions from an abusive home life to Benderat, Billy makes connections with Old Bill and Caitlin who are all on a search to find self-identity and positive growth.
