I came from China when I was 9; we came with very little money. When we got to America it seemed like a whole different planet, everything was bigger and cleaner. I had lived in a village for 9 years of my life it was hard making new friends since everyone knew each other. There wasn’t any need of socializing to make new friends, so it turned me into a nonsocial person. My parents didn’t know a single English word; neither did my older brother and I. We weren’t a very expressive family. My family doesn’t say the word love to each other; it’s weird for us to tell each other how we feel. My parents are very loving and hardworking even if they don’t express their love. My parents inspired me to work harder at life and taught me how I needed to

Although we have been through tough times together, I feel that their love and support never wavered. Because of this, I was able to grow up a confident person, I always spoke my mind and feelings, and was able to process any emotions with the help of my parents. I think that because of the environment I grew up in, it is fitting that I am in a counseling program. Most of my childhood experiences and lessons helped me to be empathetic, communicative, and strong willed. I feel like I haven’t found my place in the Hispanic population in school even though I am full Hispanic. I don’t speak Spanish fluently, I am at a different academic level than other Hispanics, and I have different interests. Yet the “ember still burns inside me”, thanks to my padres and my abuelos I know what is like to be an Idahoan Latina.…

I lived near the market behind the farm where everyone was talking and going about their beautiful day. I grew up in small town in Dar es Salaam, where the streets were constantly humming under the large palm trees and the kids were always seen playing football and other traditional games that occupied the little time they had off school. I would indulge and run with the dirt covered children. Naturally I had to find other ways to free our minds, played tag and went on heroic quests and expeditions around the neighborhood. Needless to say, my life completely changed when my family won the green card lottery and immigrated to the United States.…
