When I Went To America Study

Decent Essays
I went to America for studying last year. The life in America is very different from the life in China. People speak different languages, eat different foods. The life in school is different, too.

In China, studying is all we need to do. The only thing which decided our grade is our final test. Everyone spends lots of time in practicing quizzes and exams. We also need to focus on the classes which are considered as important classes, such as Chinese and Maths. Sometimes the teachers of the important classes will use the classes which are not considered as important classes, like art or PE, to teach. Students in high school are under a lot of pressure. They need to work hard for Gaokao, so they can go to a good colleague and get a good job

I have been able to experience the culture of the countries I was visiting and able to observe the differences between theirs and mine. One thing caught my attention very quickly when I was visiting Ireland this past summer, and it was something I noticed in Italy too. That is that all of the people typically live the same. There was hardly any division of social class, something quite different from what goes on back in America. I live in the small and widely considered wealthy town of Haddonfield.…

I had finally landed in China and I already realized how different the Chinese culture was. First the tone of voice that the Chinese use is much more soft and calm compared to the United States. They speak very softly with much more patients in their voice while Americans tend to speak louder and more rushed do some Chinese people think there being yelled at when talking to Americans because of how rushed we are. We also talk much faster because of our fast pace way of living, but the people in China pride themselves in taking things slower and with much more patience. While I was in China I realized that when speaking to someone for the first time they tend to keep their distance from each other and stand a little bit farther…

In his essay “Where I Lived, and What I Lived For,” Henry David Thoreau writes “Children, who play life, discern its true law and relations more clearly than men, who fail to live it worthily, but who think that they are wiser by experience, that is, by failure.” I agreed with Thoreau’s statement that children perceive and live life better than the adult. Children live their lives worthily by merely enjoying life because their perceptions of life have not yet contaminated by the outside world like adults have. Psychological studies showed us that children are less likely to tell lies and hide their feelings or even unable to do so because they had only influenced by their surroundings, the protective home. This is why we trust children more than adults.…

However, a few parts of China are starting to take more influence from Western culture and trying to cut down the required school time. Also, schools in general are less casual than American schools. Uniforms are mandatory in the majority of schools, for both students and teachers. This is to limit distractions for children. The teaching methods are much more traditional…

In the article “Teach Knowledge, Not “Mental Skills,” author E.D. Hirsch bases his argument on an experience he went through when he was a teacher in public school. He worked with two different principals in the same school. Comparing these two principal, the first principal did not care about what students acquired from their lessons, and the students’ academic performance was really bad. The second principal was more worried about the knowledge and his students’ academic performance. Hirsch argues that school should teach more knowledge instead of mental skills, and American should learning the teaching method of Europe and Asia which have a similar method of core-knowledge; problem-solving skill is important but depend on pertinent knowledge.…

Like the majority of the United State’s population, I am an immigrant and a relatively new one; I remember what life was like in Russia before my family moved here. Often I am asked: “How is life different? Where do you prefer?” Though I have plenty of memories, experiences, and opinions of both countries, I’ve never pitted them against each other, making those questions difficult to answer. But now, thinking about it, I can boldly say that life in Russia and the USA varies greatly.…

There are numerous stories and perspectives on each country, each culture, and even each person. Depending on how the story is told, people may perceive the story differently from what it originally should be. Like the story on Fide the houseboy that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie presented in her TED Talk, students from East Asian countries, because of limited perspectives, have the stereotype that American K-12 education is emphasizing on extracurricular activities and grade are not important overall; thus, life as an American high school student is easy. However, such stereotype on American education may cause discrimination upon those who study abroad.…

They have two types of class you can choose in senior middle school, one is more scientific, like biology, chemical, and physical; one is more about literature -- history, government, and geography, but there are three subjects people must take, Chinese, math and English. When students finish their middle school, they will face the most important exam--(Gaokao) in their life, so most Chinese students have enormous pressure. Conversely, American students’ middle schools are more interesting and relaxing. The students have a lot of elective courses, they are free to arrange their own study time, the pressure should be more smaller. Although this kind of education is missing a lot of academic…

Traveling to a foreign country in eighth grade, surrounded by my carefree friends instead of overprotective parents marked an important milestone in my life. Having the opportunity to hang out with my friends with the freedom to decide what we want in Beijing, China is an experience I’ll never forget. It’s always nerve racking as a kid when you have to leave the safety of your dependable parents and place your trust in your teachers to make sure you don’t get lost or thrown into jail in another country where no one speaks the same language as you. Flying internationally is especially terrifying when you have to go through the security and check your passport for the first time.…

Introduction “In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is King.” This well known and often quoted phrase is attributed to Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus, or Erasmus of Rotterdam, a 16th-century Dutch Renaissance humanist. The saying is worth a closer look and if you can imagine the power of someone who, among others who are disadvantaged or have a disability of some kind, the one who is least disadvantaged or has the least disability is regarded as the one who can make the greatest contribution.…
