They believed I was hispanic, laughing I told them they never asked me and I didn't think it was important. I remember them saying that we couldn’t be friends and me sitting on the floor crying at recess that day. I began to sit alone after that when I wasn’t in class. This mistake that I’m writing about took a rather long time to learn that it was a mistake. Ever since I was a child my parents always pushed for me to learn Spanish. Probably due to the fact that my family is Spanish and that half of my relatives speak Spanish only. I never got into learning Spanish, and well they couldn’t blame me, I only started speaking English when I was six. Before that I was using basic sign language which I have now forgotten.…

My Hispanic heritage and the challenges my family faced shaped my character. My grandparents, uncles, aunts, and father picked cotton in the fields in order to get by and have food on the table. My mother worked seven different jobs during high school and college to pay for her academic studies. Their experiences taught me that it is important to focus on academics in high school and be resilient in college. Being bilingual in Spanish and English is another skill I have and will benefit my future relationship with patients, especially in Texas.…

I’ll never forget the moments of watching all my friends being able to go to the playground and enjoy themselves as I would have to walk to a different classroom to my ESOL class. ESOL was an English practicing class, it allowed for students that knew very few English and was a method for us to learn and practice our English. Towards the end of the class as we all headed back from recess, or in my case from ESOL I would have a short time to speak and talk to my friends, and they would always ask about my whereabouts. I would try to explain to them exactly where I was and what I would be doing, and I knew that they did not fully comprehend me, yet I still tried. I would attend my ESOL class all throughout the third grade, by the beginning of…

As we get older we find more and more joy in our memories. We become grateful for how the simplest and smallest things made us so happy and fill us with such happiness and leave us with smiles on our faces. As we get older we often wish those times hadn’t gone by so fast and that school, work and life were that simple and so laid back again. Though most of us like thinking of the past, we have to simply take a look back in time and leave it there, in the past, so we can experience new things and have new memories to look back on in the future. This chapter is about my look back into the past.…

From day one of coming to this institution and joining the business program, I have been exposed to life-changing cultures. A perfect example of this is my TA group. It is clear that whoever decided what kids went in what group did an excellent job in mixing different personalities. Although challenging at first, I am sure that all other groups, much like mine, have blended their cultures together and are more open-minded and globally aware as a result. When first seeing my group, I immediately separated my acquaintances in two different categories: those who spoke English, and those who spoke Spanish.…
