There are many different cultures and traditions around the world from county to country; its what makes everyone all unique. Immigration was very difficult for some but needed at the same time. Many immigrants coming to America in the 1920’s and 30’s were from Europe. They came to America to escape persecution and seek freedoms and new opportunities America had to offer. The immigration for some was very turbulent and somewhat strange like in the story Son from America by Isaac Bashevis Singer.…
America has been known as the world that makes dreams come true since the early 1600s. America was the New World and everyone wanted a bite of the big apple. Founded on the hopes of being a fresh start the voyage to America became great. In a sense, America is a fresh start. The variety of people that immigrated into the states was incredible.…
Imagine Sailing on a small, crude ship to an unknown destination, with only a compass made up of a magnetized needle floating in water to guide the ship. Perhaps there are one or two hundred other passengers aboard brave enough to venture forth into the unknown. All of the early immigrants to our country dealt with this plight. In spite of this situation, the Englishmen, came to America in the 1600s for three main reasons: to escape the economic strife, social problems, and religious persecution in England. The first reason that immigrants were motivated to come to America was England's changing economy.…
Many things have changed since the founding of this nation and people seem to forget about their roots and how their ancestors came to arrive here in the first place. There are many reasons as to why one would oppose illegal immigration, hence the word "illegal". Although there are many things that one could do in order to keep our borders free from any "trespassers", I believe that building a literal and physical wall would be meaningless in making our borders safer; that is because there are many other ways for illegal aliens to enter the country and it would only affect immigration flowing from Mexico. The United States has always attracted people from varieties of cultures as well as from other parts of the world, in order to attain a better life for their family and themselves; these people enter the…
There are many reasons why people immigrated to the United State, as such higher economic jobs, better life, and liberty and safety. They wanted to be in a free country where they would feel safe and not worry about being in their home. A lot of Americans feared the immigrants coming to America because they did not want people taking their jobs. President John F. Kennedy said that. “Our attitude towards immigration reflects our faith in the American ideal.…
In the late nineteenth century, the majority of people coming into the United States were from European countries, and the Chinese immigrants were in the minority. However, these European immigrants felt threatened by the Chinese, and they wanted to stop them from coming in despite their small numbers. Even though the United States claimed that all men are created equal, it still felt compelled to exclude people based on their race and nationality. The United States was built upon the basic democratic ideals of equality, freedom, and prosperity, but through the Chinese Exclusion Act the United States abandoned these ideals in order to fight for a white nation; however, the few people who spoke out against the cries of exclusion believed in…
I’m glad to live in America because we have more freedoms than any other country We’re less harsh than other country when it comes to consequences for your actions. We have better resources here like a cleaner water supply. The last reason is there is less disease, better medications, and doctors to take care of our health problems. These are just some of the reasons why i’m glad to live in America. We have many freedoms like freedom of speech, religion, and press.…
America has several differnet values, but also has a bad habit of stepping on it's own toe. America stresses the fact that if you put hard work and determination towards reaching your goal, you are most likely to complete such. During your journey to success you do learn that you have dress a certain way, speak a certain way and act a certain way. On the way to my interview with my current job, I automatically knew that I couldn't speak, dress nor act as if I was in the presence of my friends. I had to wear one of my nicest dress suits, I had to get rid of the "slang" and speak proper english.…
The United States experienced a flood of immigrants from all over the world, during the 1860’s to the 1920’s, which can also be called the colonial era. The immigrants that entered the United States had many intentions to improve there life. Whether they come for another chance at life, or they come to escape battles, The United States was the go-to option. The United States is home to the American flag, which symbolizes freedom and protection, which is exactly what these immigrants wanted and needed. An example of a popular immigrant group that came to the United States were the Italians.…
As a child I moved about every three years, because my dad was a officer in the Marine Corps. By age eight I had to leave the United States and move across the world to the island of Okinawa, Japan. Okinawa is a very tropical island, much like Hawaii or any other coastal place like that. The process of actually moving to Japan involved a total of twenty four hours on commercial flights and twelve hours in an airport for a layover. When my mother and I finally arrived we were greeted at the airport by my dad who had left before us to get things situated for our arrival.…
The Dominican Republic; a place where you can count the opportunities of success with one hand. If you didn’t have a connection to someone in the government, the chances of obtaining a job were improbable; this was common knowledge amongst the people of my country. I often found myself eavesdropping on my friends conversing about escaping to America. As tempting as America sounded, I knew illegally entering was wrong. I was 17 years old when the connotation of “America” changed for me; my father came home with wonderful news: we had been given the opportunity as a family to move to America.…
For starters, I felt that this entire situation was somewhat ironic. Fleeing war, fearing for their life and dreaming of a better life far from the poverty and upheaval of their unstable nations, hundreds of thousands are flocking to Europe's shores (Smith-Spark, 2015). This statement immediately reminded me of why people immigrate to America, everyone is sold on the American dream and want to come here to better themselves. And the reason people are fleeing to the country is not just for opportunities, but more than anything it is for safety. I feel that although things are becoming overcrowded the citizen are being very insensitive.…
It is said that the United States is a melting pot. A place where people from all around the world come to chase new opportunities and to be seen as equal to the person standing next to them. The term “melting pot” came into general usage in the US after it was used as a metaphor describing a fusion of nationalities, cultures, and ethnicities. Due to new views on immigration, stricter social security laws, and racist presidential candidates, the life of an immigrant is not as it may seem.…
“I don’t know” I can still distinctly recall my eleven-year-old self repeatedly saying to anyone who tried to talk to me. It was my first day of school in America and that was the only sentence I could put together in English. I was born in China and lived there my whole life until my mother decided to move to New York. I thought I was just visiting her for winter break, but she dropped me off at school just a week after my arrival. As my new classmates tried to talk to me, I can see their mouth moving but they might as well be speaking gibberish.…
Our country is influenced heavily on immigration and people migrating from their own countries to gain citizenship in America, and this is why America coined the name the Melting Pot. We are all just a piece of the American puzzle. The Melting Pot helps people feel welcome and wanted in a culture other than their own. Multiculturalism definitely played a part in early America. People who immigrated from other countries to America assimilated to the culture around them.…
