Westlake Magnet

In any cliché personal development story, an even more cliché hook is used and then attempted to turn into a universal piece of advice, like “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.” In actuality, the most important thing I learned during my experience as a Westlake Magnet student was that often, you will have no idea where you are going, and that is perfectly fine. We are taught from a young age to develop a clear-cut idea of what we aspire to do in the future, or another person’s hopes for our futures are forced upon us. However, my experiences at Westlake have shown me that it is more important to learn about yourself and your identity than to force yourself to fit into a future other people have envisioned for you. As my high school career comes to a close, I realized that after 13 years of being asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?” , I still hadn’t answered the question. In 2002, a book called “StrengthsQuest” was released by Donald O. Clifton, Edward “Chip” Anderson, and Laurie A. Schreiner, in hopes it would give college students like me a simple, yet extremely helpful tool to guide them through their college experience. In this book one can find things called Signature Themes. The signature themes are given to readers after they take the “Clifton StrengthsFinder”.…

The biggest struggle I’ve found myself facing in my years of high school is feeling inadequate. My high school is academically competitive, we host not just the creme de la creme, but the cherry on top. Teachers are constantly reminding me and my peers that this town is like a fairy tale, it’s a basket case, a rare occurrence. In my town, everyone drives Ferraris, Mercedes-Benz, Porsches, BMW’s, Jeeps, crazy expensive cars and everyone lives in crazy expensive houses and wear crazy expensive clothes. It’s always insane to drive to nearby towns like Dallas and Fort Worth and see homeless people or people not as well off as I am.…

“My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place” (KJV Jerimiah 50:6). A compass is believed to ensure guidance to a lost individual, no matter if you are a sailor lost in the Pacific Ocean or an explorer walking through the Amazon Forest; a broken compass does not provide guidance if you are lost. For this I believe I am a broken compass because all of the directions that I am receiving in my life are leading me down the wrong path and I do not know where I am going, but that broken compass can be fixed. Growing up as a child, my family already had my educational life mapped out; it was simple, go to college and pursue a career in nursing. I was fine with that because I am interested in setting that as my life long goal.…
