The year was 2014. I was a senior in high school, already I had committed to go to Colorado Mesa University, I had a track scholarship and I was going to major in Geology, ultimately wanting to go into petroleum engineering. The only thing was, I didn’t want to. I did not want to go be a geologist, I wanted to travel, to see the world! As cliché as it may have been, I dropped out, I worked for a period of time and sent myself on a trip to Europe to “find myself”.…
Active Listening Assignment A friend came to me with concern over her future career options. She expressed her want of many different career fields that she wished to pursue. This was problematic because if she tried to pursue all of her interests, she would need to attend school for about 8 years and be buried in student debt. Although she knew that she would be unable to pursue all of her possible career paths, she wasn’t sure which she wanted to follow and didn’t want to make the wrong choice.…
As just an 18-year-old, it is next to impossible to know what you want to do with the rest of your life. I had always known I wanted to work in the fashion industry, but I wanted to go into the business side of it, while still being heavily involved in the exciting parts of the industry. I decided to take on a difficult quest and attend the University of Mississippi, majoring in Integrating Marketing Communications, and hoping to one-day intern in and later move to New York, New York. My quest is very similar to Corliss’ quest in The Search Engine as she plans to leave the Spokane Indian Reservation to pursue a college education in writing, which is unheard of in her culture and looked down upon in a way by her family. And while our quests…
Although our problem is about colleges, we don’t want students to be confused on what to do in life after college. We would get freshmen and sophomores focused on careers so as juniors they can find a college to match their career. Students would use the information we give them to fill out a worksheet for both careers and colleges to save for later use. We recognized that some students may not be interested in doing this so we decided to schedule an assembly in February where current seniors and former alumni give their experiences, stories, and regrets while preparing and applying to college. We are hoping that this will encourage students to do the worksheets and dedicate more time to preparing for…
As a freshman in highschool, I am still very young, but I am also growing up much faster than I expected. Graduation is nearly three years away which means I need to start thinking about my future. My post high school life will be comprised of numerous factors, but one of the most essential components will be my career. I have given a great deal of thought about what careers I might want to pursue, and I have narrowed it down to two occupations: a veterinary technician and an occupational therapist. These careers are similar in their communication skill requirements but differ in work environment and pay.…
I even earned the privilege of enrolling in Honors and AP courses because of my hard work. My current goals includes finishing my senior year with A’s only, becoming more of an advocate for myself, and graduating high school with an acceptance to a great…
Coming into college I had the prospective to major in Accounting and becoming an accountant. Before coming to college I was forced to majoring into Criminal Justice. All simply because my mother wanted to live her life through. Now that I have been majoring in this career field for over two years; I grew to like the major and stuck with it. With that being said, I made it my goal to take on other career goal that I wanted to take on.…
What am I going to do with my life? What am I going to major in? What do I want to be? Many people ask themselves these questions, especially students who are attending college for the first time. I was one of those students.…
As a high school junior, I have been thinking about where I would like to attend college and what career I would like to pursue in the future. Choosing a career is more difficult than a person would think, considering there are millions of careers one can choose from out there. I went to mymajors.com, and with the help of this website, it broke down the category of interest I seemed most compatible with: health sciences. While exploring the different careers, there were various types of professions that seemed perfect for me. When I chose the profession, it gave me a list of colleges that seemed most suitable to my taste.…
When I was in 2nd grade, I had the long term goal of graduating high school, and up to this day I would consider that one of my now short term goal is to graduate high school. Before I am able to graduate I want to set myself to do well in AP Calculus by getting an 90 or higher. My grades are really important to me. I have several teachers tell us that grades are not important and what really matters is what you really know. They might be right, but I feel that my grade reflects on what I know and if I have an 80 that bothers me because that grade is telling me that I am not trying my hardest and that I am missing something.…

Ever since I was a little kid, I have always been a highly motivated individual. Striving for perfection has never been a foreign concept to me. Unfortunately, being a perfectionist has created some issues within my academic career. With time being a restraint on multiple tests, I have left a plentiful amount of answers blank trying to make sure every detail is correct. Despite this, I have still maintained high A’s in every one of my classes.…
The Honors College experience at Kent State University would help me realize my academic and professional goals through a more personal approach. Since I come from a graduating class of less than fifty students, I think smaller class sizes would be beneficial for my growth. It is a much more comfortable learning environment when you can know everyone's name and how they work academically. However, I also want to expand my horizons and meet new people in order to truly find my passion. I feel that the Honors program would help me figure out what I can do that is consistent with my interests and give me the concrete steps to reach my potential.…
