Skill Description: The motor skill involves two teams hitting a volleyball back and forth over a net without letting the ball hit the floor. Which ever team lets the ball hit the floor loses the point. Games are to 25 points, and only three touches on the ball are allowed per side before it has to be sent over the net. This game is worthy of teaching fourth graders because it teaches them about teamwork, quick thinking, communication, cooperation, etc. Teamwork and cooperation correlate with volleyball because in order to play the game you must play as a team; one person cannot win the game, therefore cooperation is needed. Quick thinking and decision making is also very important in the game because a player only has a few seconds to decide whether or not to go after the ball. In addition, communication plays a large role when playing volleyball because to avoid errors, or players running into each other, you must communicate with them. This will teach students to talk to one another while incorporating teamwork.
Key Elements: The key elements to focus on when someone is teaching volleyball to beginners is to teach them how to properly pass, set, underhand serve and hit the ball as well as the direction of rotation, and the basic rules. Another key element is to teach a modified version of volleyball to fourth graders; to better assist their needs and understanding of the sport.
