Volleyball has been an important aspect of my life ever since I began in seventh grade and my commitment to the sport has grown with each year. Heading into high school, I knew that I wanted to continue with volleyball. To better prepare myself, that summer I went to a week-long intensive volleyball camp, where my skills increased exponentially. Back at home, I went to every open gym and beach volleyball session the varsity team provided. I wanted to prove that I was capable of playing at a high school level. Because of these efforts, the following school year I was placed on the varsity volleyball team.

Volleyball often takes my mind off my busy school life. However when I’m not playing, my other interests are in the sciences, mathematics, and art. In the sciences particularly, my career interest lies in medicine. This past summer I was invited to the Global Youth Summit on the Future of Medicine at Brandeis University. The Summit was a week-long, intensive immersion into the many medical fields, and I was joined by about 250 other delegates from around the world. This program opened my eyes to medicine and propelled my interest even deeper. Now, I am taking the Harvard Medical School HMX Fundamentals online course in physiology to get a headstart in medical education. In addition, I enjoy being able to blend together my other interests, math and art. A concept that has always intrigued me is the beauty of mathematics. Three years ago I took a summer class in a camp at Yale University called “the Mathematics of Beauty” and since then I continue to delve deeper into that topic. This encompasses concepts such as the Fibonacci Sequence, the Golden Ratio, fractals, and curves. For example, for my IB Mathematics internal assessment paper last year I explored the Golden Ratio in architecture. I am also enrolled in the IB Visual Arts class at my school which always me to further express my

How could I have made smart choices about my health to prevent this catastrophe. I wasn’t about to let this stereotype define me, so I strove to invalidate it. Since I joined volleyball two years after most of my peers, I was put on the “B-team” throughout junior high.…
