September 22nd 2017 Discourse Community Analysis
In our English 1301 lecture class, last week we had a discussion about Discourse Community. Discourse community is a group of people where people have same thoughts, ideas, and emotions about the group. To get into the Discourse Community one must be able to learn about emblematic ways to communicate and argue with people inside that group. This paper is all about how I entered the discourse community of Volleyball Team in High school by gaining required knowledge, skills as well as the power to persuade the other members of the community. I learned many skills in my high school like digging, blocking, spiking, setting and serving. I am a part of the volleyball team because of the skills I have. Being a part of the volleyball team I learned how to play defensive games over the last period of time. I learned to defend against opponent. Volleyball is all about anticipating what your opponent is going to do next . That is what life is all about: anticipating what obstacles might come and being prepared for them . For example, I learned Blocking to defend when an opponent is Spiking. I learned to time my digging to make sure that I can defend the ball from hitting the ground when an opponent hits the ball. Furthermore, I learned overhead serving to make the ball not that easy for the opponents to take. Once I was playing volleyball with my juniors, one of them came to me and said “You are really good at Volleyball but I am not. “ I replied, “My brother you just do not need to be that smart, that tall to play volleyball but what matters is how seriously are you going to take the Volleyball game. “ Next time he came to me and said,” I want to master the skills as you did, how can I do that?” I trained him but I didnt train him physically I helped him develop a mentality that life is full of ups and downs and you always need to be prepared for it just like when opponent spikes the ball , you need to be prerpared to dig it up . Through lessons like that he learned not to take volleyball just as a sport but as an aspect of life
