Crime across the world is no surprise in the eyes of the people. When a crime is committed, people often want to find out what exactly triggered the offense. Video games have long been in the spotlight as a source for violence. Brad Bushman’s editorial, “Do violent video games play a role in shootings?,” explains how video games can cause violence and relate to media outside of playing on consoles. However, Bushman’s accusations are incorrect. Opinions are always refutable, and must be backed up with viable evidence. Video games are not related to crimes or other violent acts. Video games are a relief from reality. After a long day at work or school, video games can help alleviate the stress built up over the course of the day. However, Brad Bushman claims that video games are not just an escape from reality. Instead, he thinks that various mass shootings and aggressive behavior have resulted from violent video games. “Alexis was not the first mass killer to have an obsession with violent video games. Adam Lanza, who killed 26 children in an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, was also said to be a fan of first-person shooting games” (Bushman). This is just one mass shooting that Bushman states in his article linking violent video games to the shootings. As stated before, all opinions must be backed up with supportable evidence or the claim can be proven false.
