“Students are prohibited to using their cell phones during school hours” A teacher allows the class to take a picture of the notes they did that day. Most of the students follow through with that direction. Except one student takes a picture of another student without permission. Another student witnesses the student taking the picture. He yells to the teacher and informs her about the situation. The student has a fairly good reputation at the school and the other student has no evidence to prove anything, he could be lying for all the teacher knows. Who should the teacher believe? Administrators have become alarmed by the increase of students using their phones to bully each other during school hours and even to arrange fights that are filmed and then posted to social media. As cell phones become more and more essential in our modern society, it’s causing administrators and principals think what they can do about this problem. Letting kids know the consequences of using their phones inappropriately in school such as getting it taken away or having detention, may reduce the amount of students doing it. Teachers can’t keep students phones forever, but what the parents choose to do with the student’s phone may also impact their future choices. Teachers and staff are expected to punish students who aren’t following the school rules and acting inappropriately. Depending on the action the student was executing, consequences can range from calling home to getting lunch or even after school detention for several days.” About 29,000 girls and 14,000 boys inflicted self pain. Although all of the injuries were intentional, not all of them were suicide attempts. Twenge points to smart phones which crossed the 50 percent threshold in of ownership in late 2012, around the same time when teen depression and suicide began to rise.” (“More Middle School…”) When depression and suicide began to rise in 2012, which is also the same time where the smartphone population passed the 50 percent threshold, leading experts to think that smartphones are causing young students and teens to inflict self pain. Teachers allow students to use their phones to take quizzes through an app called Kahoot, or use them as calculators in math. “Cell phones have become such a big part of a students life now. For example if a teacher writes down notes on the front board of the classroom, a student can capture those notes by snapping a picture of it quickly.” (“Cell Phones Service…”) It is true that students can use their phones for academic and appropriate reasons, but very few students will follow those guidelines. Teachers can’t check to see what students are actually doing on their phones therefore students need strict guidelines and need to know what the consequences are.
Overall, prohibiting students the use of their cellphones in school will benefit both teachers and students. Students wills exceed more in school and stay out of trouble which will create a more advanced and stronger society. It will be easier for students to stay out of trouble and focus more on their schoolwork. It will prevent students from being side tracked during school and help them work harder to succeed in their
