3. Understand procedures for responding to accidents and sudden illness 4.9. Accidents that may occur in a care home setting may be slipping or falling over, burns or scolds, cuts or electric shocks; all of these accidents could be prevented by health and safety risk assessments and reports. Sudden illnesses that may occur in my own work setting may be sickness bugs, diarrhoea, heart attacks or strokes, fits or seizures which are illnesses that cannot always be prevented but health and safety procedures would help if these situations ever occurred. 4.10. Following the correct policies and procedures in the event of an accident or sudden illness is extremely important. Firstly not putting yourself at risk is the main thing you should think about, and ringing emergency services or seeking assistance from another member of staff or manager/nurse. Ensuring the person injured or sick is kept safe at all times until the required help arrives, by clearing the area of obstructions, people, and unnecessary equipment. If needed you should administer first aid, part of health and safety training, as you are waiting for ambulance or a doctor. Once the event is out of your hands it is important to document everything that happened in a detailed report so the events can be passed on to the relevant people and they will know
