I can confidently say that TRiO has greatly improved my college life academically, socially, and mentally. Without this program, I would not be as prepared and focused as I am for college today. Signing contracts ensuring I meet my goals has been one of the driving factors behind my success. The contracts were a constant reminder of my responsibilities in college. Not only should I be focus in my coursework, but I should reach out and participate in other areas of the college. For my first year, I promised to complete a certain amount of scholarships, meet with my professors in office hours, volunteer, and receive tutoring. Volunteering was something I had not immediately planned for in college. By promising to meet a certain number of hours it made me appreciate the act of giving back to the community and I will continue to give back during my free time over summer. My academic life has also thrived because of TRiO. Receiving tutoring has benefitted me by preserving my high grade in statics, and from now on I will seek out more help when I need it. …show more content…
This program seeks to assist students in their college years, going into college I was confident that I would be fine and would not have to ask for too much help. But now I realize I was wrong. There was so much that I did not know and needed help with. For that, I asked my peer mentor and my coach. Another way TRiO has befitted my personal life is by providing me with a space to work in. I have been on the white boards working on differential equations countless times and have been told that TRiO is closing in 15 minutes just as many times. For me, having a quiet place to work is detrimental to my mental health. The reason I stay on campus late is because my home can be rowdy at

I am not one to brag. I have no reason to. Bragging is, in my opinion, a selfish way to assert oneself and make oneself seem better than another. There is really no point, and it almost never leads to another person respecting you. People gain respect through their actions and through their experience, not through what they say about themselves.…

I also wanted to learn how to come up with topics and write about them easier. One last very important thing that I wanted to learn was how to prepare myself for college next year. After finishing Composition 1, I can say that I did accomplish all of those goals.…

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

Viewing the past four essays shows the progress and decline of my writing style, and structure. The four essays that were required by the class varied from the best to the worst, both having their similarities and differences. Choosing two out of the four essays, I came to a conclusion that the “process analysis” essay was the best, and the worst essay was the “descriptive” essay. Although it varied from their definitions and structure, the essay’s showed how much the writer, put their work into it. The certain characteristics that made it the worst to the best defined how well the essay would turn out to be.…

I logged any letters we received in the database and alert the advisors who the information was most relevant to. It was also my responsibility to send the post off. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…
