In “Today’s Exhausted Superkids”, Frank Bruni adequately addresses the growing problem of teenaged student sleep deprivation. What I like best about this article is Bruni’s use of different studies, data, and interviews he gave to support …show more content…
Without an adequate amount of sleep every night, teenagers are not able to function as they should. Staying focused and alert during the day is especially difficult after a sleepless night. As Bruni stated, ”It’s a prerequisite for healthy growth. It’s a linchpin of sanity”. #?
My personal experience with sleep deprivation is very similar to the teenagers Bruni describes in his article. I have experienced the detrimental effects of getting less sleep, as I have gotten older. When I am at school after getting 6 or 7 hours of sleep, I find staying focused, doing work, and taking tests are much more difficult. This becomes very stressful for myself and fellow peers who suffer from the same absence of sleep.
I especially agree with Bruni’s thoughts on the result of anxiety and panic. Students at Ste. Genevieve can relate to his view on the “real culprit” of sleep deprivation - the pressure to be perfect. The pressures of high school, and life in general, seem to be great among high school students. As students enter the latter years of high school, responsibilities become greater. These responsibilities include: jobs, applying/preparing for college, and schoolwork. All three of these examples are personal challenges that sometimes inhibit the amount of sleep I get.
