Introduction
College students tend to live very busy lives. From school orientated tasks such readings and exams, to part time jobs, or, time permitting, sports and recreation. With so many things on the go, it is often very hard to accomplish everything while obtaining the daily recommended amount of sleep. However, it is becoming increasingly evident how crucial an adequate amount of sleep may be. Sleep is like food for the brain, and without enough of it, our bodies will greatly be affected. The overall performance, feelings, and appearance could be extremely dependent on the amount of sleep a student gets.

Demonstrated through this paper, it is my goal to address to what extent college students’ duration of sleep can affect their academic achievement along with various other factors, such as, their health and mood. Furthermore, by researching the following topic, I am hopeful possible solutions may arise to help solve these issues and in

One example of this includes a study done by Ana A. Gomes, José Tavares, and Maria Helena P. de Azevedo, showing that there are strong links between not enough sleep and “lower academic performance of university students” as well as problems with “other aspects of daytime functioning impairment.” (___). In addition, a performed study at Iowa State University showed that the average GPA of people who slept for 6 hours or less was 0.5 points lower than those who slept 9 hours or more (__). These examples simply touch on the aspects that affect the overall wellbeing of students when not enough sleep is accounted for. The lack of sleep and energy when attempting to complete wanted tasks can induce a viscous cycle of stress which can further lead to sleep impairment. Seeing how large of an impact sleep has on academic performance alone, it is evident that research needs to be done on how to solve this
