The ability to travel abroad has gained not only popularity in the past decade, but has become much more accessible to the average student. This newfound availability has had both positive and negative effects. In Anthony Ogden’s article, “The View from the Veranda: Understanding Today’s Colonial Student” he discusses that with the rise of American students traveling abroad to continue their education, they are expecting the same conveniences offered at their destinations. Ogden calls these students ‘Colonial Students’ stating that they are a group of students who, “…wants to be abroad and take full advantage of all the benefits studying abroad offers, but is not necessarily open to experiencing the less desirable side of being there” (Ogden …show more content…
As someone who is going to a country that is normally not an abroad option, I was not that happy with his generalizations of American students. His thoughts that preparing for the abroad trip also irked me in that with the forced interaction with citizens is counterintuitive. As for some of the conveniences that he states, there is some expectations, but this is an increasing globalized world and now many places have similar items available. As for avoiding falling into the pitfalls of expecting life to be similar to America I plan on experiencing life there to the fullest. Going out every day that I have time and traveling to a new place on or off the island. I will document each travel in a journal and retell my feelings and my thoughts of that place. Will it be easy and will I miss certain commodities, of course I will miss things, but this a time to experience a new commodity and perhaps when I return to America, I will miss the newfound comfort. This is a one in a lifetime chance and I do not plan on squandering it one just staying on the veranda like Ogden believes so many American students

American history professor, Patrick Allitt, in the essay, “Should Undergraduates Specialize?” published by the Chronicle of Higher Education, argues that the American education system differs greatly from the British system in order to advocate for reform in America. Allitt supports his assertion by comparing his daughter, Frances, experience in college in America to his in Britain. The author’s overall purpose was to describe the differences between his college experience and how the average American will experience higher education. He describes his professor and tutors as people that “ didn’t show any delicate concern for our feelings.” Allitt employed an educated tone when discussing higher education in order to appeal to his audience’s…

As a student in America we all know the struggle of affording college. With the prices of tuition going higher each year it is becoming a journey to even attend college, let alone graduate with a degree. In America’s capitalist society college is becoming more and more of a business and less of a institution that is truly dedicated to bettering the student. With capitalism we have the ability to raise and lower costs of things based on how much we have and how successful the business is. These prices are not controlled by the government entirely, but instead by us.…

One may doubt the logic of why someone would put aside money that is already scarcely distributed, just to travel. Other than the reasonable expense of travelling, it is also a matter of doing so while one is still able to. These two factors combined highlight the idea that there will be an increase of young people to go and do some traveling in their near future. As stated by Thompson, the era of underemployed graduates is “hardly over”. This means that more and more young people will be stuck in jobs that do not offer much potential in terms of wage growth, forcing them to deal with a situation that does not promise to secure their future.…

The booming voice called out for my little family of four to board our plane, a plane that would take us to the depths of a mysterious alien world. Or at least that’s what little six-year-old me thought when I left my home country of Cuba to come to the United States. That was a time of emotional turmoil for me, feeling the pain of leaving everything and everyone I knew behind. There was the excitement and fear of coming to a new unknown place, but there was also a feeling of dread at this vast language barrier that I was facing, and finally accepting and adapting to this new life. Coming from Cuba was a difficult experience that helped me grow and learn.…

In the first few months, students experience many culture shocks, but eventually, students get used to it. However, we do feel different and uncomfortable living in different countries. Sometimes students are discriminated because of our races and ethnic groups. The aspect is, we tend to be with people who have the same culture or similar which substantially undermines the purpose of studying abroad. If international students have some problems or questions, students often ask people who can speak the same language or share similar feelings and customs.…
