She gives the class our first assignment which includes exchanging contact information and an informal interview. The topics chosen for the interview include my classmate’s hobbies, accomplishments and goals. The three English Composition 11 students I interviewed are Kevin Uribes, Jennifer Conrad and Shandi Trent. The first student I had a chance to interview is the young and quite Kevin Uribes. My first topic is to ask Kevin about his hobbies. (1) Kevin explains that he enjoys hanging out with his friends while playing video games. Currently he plays2K …show more content…

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

Reflecting on my midterm progress in English 102, I realize all rhetorical modes need to be employed to have an effective final product. My confidence in my ability to develop and express a clear message to the reader has grown exponentially since English 101. Our initial exploratory writings, Diagnostic Essay and Editorial Analysis, provided me an opportunity to conduct an editorial review on other journalists’ works. Since these assignments, I am now equipped to conduct editorial reviews my own written works allowing for efficient revisions of essays to the professional level.…

Throughout this portfolio I will demonstrate to my instructor and peers my development throughout our course, including the challenges and successes. I hope my portfolio will serve as a helpful source for me to refer back to in future classes, and aid as a guide for future students and their journey through college. In the beginning of first semester, in English Composition 121, I had preconceived ideas as to what the expectations would be for this class based on my experience eleven years ago. I had pre-determined how I would approach this class and what I was going to do, so never once did I expect to learn something useful.…

This English 101 class has helped me in variety of ways in gaining and shaping skills in writing. I learned how do compose several types of essays including: professional, informal, casual, cause and effect, and argumentative and was given the format for writing these. Every week, the class was given one of these types of essay to write and throughout the class periods, I would start and finish them. I saw that if I outline these essays with key points of my topic before I officially being writing the first draft, an essay is not difficult to come up with. I would only have to include transitions, which I also learned, and maybe a few more sentences to make my ideas connect properly and flow smoothly.…

The experience gained through this field experience was very positive and gratifying. The first couple of sessions were like the ground periods, I had to get familiar with Hidden Oaks Elementary School and their ESOL program as well as to meet the team of teachers and their students. I will hope to capture in this reflection the knowledge obtained, the positive aspects, and outcomes of this valuable practice. From the very beginning I felt very comfortable with both teachers and the students’.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 1010 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. When I first started this course, I was scared and didn’t really know what to expect. I branched out to different styles and types of essays as well as incorporating outside sources into my work. Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Throughout the first semester of English 101, I have learned not only many new writing styles and vocabulary words, but also I have learned a few things about myself. I have a passion for writing and I would love to continue to aggrandize my vocabulary, and continue learning new writing tactics. I believe that I am a great candidate for the second semester English 102 class because I contribute many things to the class such as; my outgoing personality and determined work ethic, my passion to write and learn, and my grade which reflects all of my hard work. First of all, I have an over-the-top, garrulous and outgoing personality. I am not afraid to contribute my opinion to class discussions and to encourage other students to do the same.…

Sitting at my desk in english class, 15 minutes before the end of the period, feeling a small sense of deep inner satisfaction from my work in the previous double period of Draw/Paint level 4, I held a piece of paper in my hands pertaining the information and guidelines of a common app essay. Somewhat confused, I stared blankly at the paper. The bolded words of the length requirement and the due date stuck out against the pure white like a needle through the skin of my finger. I felt a deep sense of dread as I was trying to brainstorm an immediate idea as to what I could write about. I thought of the lessons I learned from my father on right and wrong.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

I have absolutely loved English 101 this semester—and I am not just saying that to make you feel good. In one semester alone I can confidently say I have learned more than I have in any other English class. But what made this class so special to me was that I learned more than just grammar and rhetoric—I learned new ways of thinking. Throughout my education career I have rarely been asked to consider two sides of a situation. The idea of having an opinion and portraying it clearly to others was drilled into me in high school; but my opinion is only half of what matters.…
