It is the spring semester of 2016 at National Park Community College. The day begins with Joan Henry’s English Composition 11 class where Mrs. Henry divides the class into groups of four. She gives the class our first assignment which includes exchanging contact information and an informal interview. The topics chosen for the interview include my classmate’s hobbies, accomplishments and goals. The three English Composition 11 students I interviewed are Kevin Uribes, Jennifer Conrad and Shandi Trent. The first student I had a chance to interview is the young and quite Kevin Uribes. My first topic is to ask Kevin about his hobbies. (1) Kevin explains that he enjoys hanging out with his friends while playing video games. Currently he plays2K …show more content…

Anne Grujich, one of the best students I have worked with in 29 years of teaching and counseling, is an exceptional young woman. Annie transferred to our school last year in the middle of 11th grade. This can be a very difficult transition, but Annie’s adjustment has been remarkably smooth. She continued the Advanced Placement classes she began in her former school, hit the ground running, and succeeded magnificently, earning three 5’s and a 4 on her AP Exams. This year Ms. Dana Meute, AP English Literature and Composition teacher, is thrilled to have Annie in class.…

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

Throughout this portfolio I will demonstrate to my instructor and peers my development throughout our course, including the challenges and successes. I hope my portfolio will serve as a helpful source for me to refer back to in future classes, and aid as a guide for future students and their journey through college. In the beginning of first semester, in English Composition 121, I had preconceived ideas as to what the expectations would be for this class based on my experience eleven years ago. I had pre-determined how I would approach this class and what I was going to do, so never once did I expect to learn something useful.…

I will hope to capture in this reflection the knowledge obtained, the positive aspects, and outcomes of this valuable practice. From the very beginning I felt very comfortable with both teachers and the students’.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 1010 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. When I first started this course, I was scared and didn’t really know what to expect. I branched out to different styles and types of essays as well as incorporating outside sources into my work. When I received my first essay back with the feedback and the grade, I realized that I was not a really good writer.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

First of all, I have an over-the-top, garrulous and outgoing personality. I am not afraid to contribute my opinion to class discussions and to encourage other students to do the same.…

I have absolutely loved English 101 this semester—and I am not just saying that to make you feel good. In one semester alone I can confidently say I have learned more than I have in any other English class. But what made this class so special to me was that I learned more than just grammar and rhetoric—I learned new ways of thinking. Throughout my education career I have rarely been asked to consider two sides of a situation. The idea of having an opinion and portraying it clearly to others was drilled into me in high school; but my opinion is only half of what matters.…

Written language is a trait known to be only possessed by mankind. Although other species may have audible forms of communication, man is able to record and document his thoughts, feelings, or events that have unfolded in a way that can be viewed multiple times without him having to use his voice over and over. Literacy is a skill that adults in the United States are expected to have; but the level of your literacy says a lot about you and can have a tremendous impact on what career you end up in. When I first walked into this class, I knew I would have to write a lot. Coming from different English classes where I’ve written many papers before, I thought I would have an easy time in the class. Upon receiving the first writing assignment and getting the help I needed, I realized that the class was going to be a lot more work than I expected. Each assignment I received was a new start for me to improve my writing. My sentences were structured differently than they were in the beginning because of the grammar that we learned, concession and appositives.…
