The Pros And Cons Of Campus Carry

Here in Austin, Texas we are very concerned about the Texas Senate Bill 11 (SB 11) that was passed by the Texas Legislature often referred to as “Campus Carry.” It permits individuals with a license to carry a concealed handgun or a concealed weapon on public university campuses in Texas beginning August 1, 2016. Since then there has been a lot of controversy over the topic. College is a place to learn not a place for violence. I believe that guns being carried opened or concealed threatens our safety and should not be permitted at colleges with the help of utilitarianism. A campus is not a place where guns should be allowed. Private universities in Texas have all banned the right of campus carry at their school, and there is no confusion as to why. At the University of Texas there has been a lot of boy cots since this bill was passed. It has even gotten to the point where three professors at the University of Texas are suing to block the campus carry law. The University of Texas has had a history of Gun violence, in 1966 where a student killed 18 people. Reminders like this, and how if they had the law in place, people would have the right to defend themselves. We also have the right of the second amendment, which is the right to bear arms. We already have open carry in Texas, why should it be any differently when it comes to a college campus. There is speculation that where there is gun free zones there is more of a probability that there will be a shooting, hence their need for a campus carry law that makes them feel safer. They feel these rules will continue to allow the University to foster an educational environment that is safe, secure, open, tolerant, and rich with vibrant discussion, debate, academic freedom, and discourse while respecting the right of licensed holders to carry a handgun as permitted by Texas state
