Imperialism is when stronger nations take over weaker nations. British imperialism reached many nations across the globe effecting each in a different way. In some areas the British reached had positive impacts, bringing infrastructure, trade, and wealth to the area. While in other places there were negative impacts like exploitation, and disaster. India was unfortunately subject to both. However, for the vast majority, Imperialism in India had many positive effects during the Raj through their infrastructure, the British railways, the Indian people’s reactions to the arrival of their new rulers, and nationalism that helped give India a unified identity. The negative effect was the Sepoy Mutiny, which happened a year before the Raj began, which triggered the Muslims and Hindus to have a lasting adverse view of the East India Company, and British rule as a whole. One of the causes of Imperialism is that Britain had economic motives. As Strayer puts it “… imperialism promised to solve the class conflicts of an industrializing society while avoiding revolution or the serious redistribution of wealth.” One way that there was class conflict was through the term “White Man’s Breed” which meant that white men went into other areas of the world to take resources that they thought they needed. White men saw themselves as dominant and superior over other races. The white men also felt that they had authoritative power and responsibility to teach other nations about what civilization is supposed to look like. Another way that there was class conflict in India was the struggle for power between the Hindu and Muslim religions. Under British rule, Muslims and Hindus had separate inheritance laws to follow.
