Transactional Leadership Transactional leadership style is another important leadership style to have in many different situations. According to Marquis and Huston (2012), one who follows transactional leadership is “concerned with the day-to-day operations” (p. 13). They are worried about doing the tasks that they do for every patient, every day. In this situation, the transactional leader would have focused on the day to day tasks. She would have been a caretaker to the patient and did what needed to be done. She would be more of a supervisor in the process of completing what needed to be done for the patient and would intervene when necessary. The major difference of the Laisse-faire leadership style she used and transactional leadership is that she would be available to supervise those caring for her patient. They are viewed as a leader. Finding leaders who know and use proper leadership styles can be difficult but important. Before one can know the most effective leadership style to use, they must be aware of their own leadership styles. Nurses need to understand the different leadership styles and know which ones they use most often. Once a nurse understands the type of leadership they display, they can work towards using the most effective leadership style. According to Delgado and Mitchell (2016), “More than three quarters (78 percent) of the respondents said that they believed that academic leadership can be learned.” Most of the nurses had received leadership training on the job, through mentoring, and in leadership classes.
