1. The best leadership style that describes CNO Jones based on the behavior theory is authoritative leader. The authoritative leader mobilizes the team toward a common vision and focuses on end goals. The authoritative style works best when the team needs a new vision because circumstances have changed. Well, the hospital has recently lost 2 surgeons and the surgery volumes have declined by 25% this has caused a dramatic impact on the hospitals budget. CNO Jones need to reduce the salary expenses and meet financial goals specified by the CEO and CFO. The authoritative leadership style dictates policies and procedures and decides what goals are to be achieved and directs and control all activities without meaningful participation by subordinates. CNO Jones expects her managers to follow policies and procedures and new guidelines. CNO Jones has been meeting regularly with the CFO and CEO about the patient volume decline, but has not discussed the changes with her managers. CNO Jones exhibits the characteristics of a level 4 effective leader. Level four leaders catalyzes commitment to and vigorous pursuit of a clear and compelling vision: stimulates the group to high performance standards (Collins, 2001). As an effective leader one must be able to perform task to the required standard, within the optimum time frame. CNO Jones is being pressured for immediate reduction in salary expenses and restructuring due to the recent volume declines. CNO Jones plans to inform the Med-Surg manager and the Women’s Health director of the plan to restructure the units within one week. CNO is faced with making very difficult decisions that will impact every unit she is responsible for. She is working to combine the staff on her units. She has identified the number of FTE’s she will need to eliminate that will reduce the salary expenses and meet the financial goals specified by the CEO and
