Leadership Reflection Essay
I find the book Leadership a very short introduction written by Keith Grint to be informative as it gives a better understanding on leadership which is one of the most talked about topics today. This is as a result of diversified definitions and beliefs about leadership. The book helps readers to focus more on what leadership is, how leadership is different from management, whether leaders are born or made, who leaders are and if people actually need leaders. We cannot do without leaders. Leadership goes beyond our predetermined perception of who a leader is as well as what their leadership styles are.

The behavioral/ style approach focuses on specific behaviors of a leader and not their traits. Therefore the behavior of a leader determines their success. The writer uses this approach to show that anyone can become a leader at any given time, provided they learn the most appropriate behavioral response to a particular problem. The contingency theory is another approach. I understand that it emphasizes on both the leader’s personality and the situation in which the leader operates. It is characterized by three factors which creates favorable or unfavorable situations. The factors are leader- member relations, task structure and the position of power. Finally, the charismatic leadership has leaders with extraordinary qualities that motivate a large number of people. For example, Martin Luther King junior was a charismatic leader who influenced many people positively (Keith, 2010). Therefore, leaders are a necessary aspect of the society and firms as well. Although many societies in the past had no formal leaders, that is changing with time more so from the colonization of countries. Clearly, leadership has some connection with some sacred dominions. The sanctified aspect of leadership consists of three qualities (Keith, 2010). The qualities as described by Keith Grint are separation, sacrifice and silence. Separation has historically been linked to leadership. Leaders in these societies are separated from the common people even by the type of clothes they wear. Therefore, I notice that there is a kind of distancing between the leaders and the followers. The distance gives the leaders space to identify problems and time to solve them.
