Background of the situation:
In June of 1979, the medical staff at Brendan Hospital held a mass meeting at the hospital to discuss various allegations against CEO, Don Wherry. A petition was signed by half the medical staff and by half the employees of the hospital at the mass meeting. The petition demanded Don Wherry’s resignation and even included threats of forgoing patient care if he did not step down. Four doctors and nurse representatives met with the board of trustees to deliver the petition. The petition accused Wherry of being incompetent, devious, acting in an unprofessional manner along with several other allegations. However, the main problems, issues, and concerns of Brendan Hospital are associated with the board of trustees and the lack of leadership they project.
Main Problems, issues, and concerns:
Reflecting upon the manner in which the board of directors handled the termination of Don Wherry, one could easily distinguish several faults amongst the board. The board of trustees lacks a vision for the future of the hospital, contains several biased individuals and is composed of ill-suited members.
• Biased individuals/ill-suited members o The board of trustees consists of biased individuals along with individuals who are deemed inappropriate to serve as a board member to the hospital. Numerous board members voiced their displeasure with having to be present at the board meeting, which portrays their lack of commitment to the hospital. Wherry certainly has the experience and credentials to lead a healthcare organization. His hard work was compensated for via a raise from the board at the end of his first year because of his great work. Clearly, the hospital lacks a clear goal for the future. Wherry met or exceeded the goals laid out for him by the board of trustees. However, the goals failed to address specific issues and failed to layout the vision of the future of the hospital. • Cultural Insensitivity o Brendan Hospital is located in a blue-collared town consisting of 50,000 residents. Numerous individuals on the medical staff found it difficult to communicate and relate with Don Wherry. Don was also at fault for not following up with the board of trustees on areas in which he could improve. His attitude came off as abrasive and arrogant to the staff members within the hospital.
