One of the prime issues with youth leadership today is the quality of communication. Almost all communication done by young people today is non-verbal; it has been reduced to texting, chatting, instant messaging, and emails and phone calls if we are lucky. The youth communication has grown greatly impersonal with little connection with the people that they communicate with because they rarely take the time to speak to people face-to-face. This personal connection is essential to being a good leader. Clear, personal communication leaves little room for error and forms a bond with a leader's constituents. It is important for youth leaders to be personally connected to themselves so that they can connect well with others.

Incorporate a semi-meditation into your morning or beginning of your day obtain a sense of focus. You do not need to "clear your mind" as is the common mantra for meditation, but allow yourself time to sit down and do nothing but collect your thoughts for the day. Think about what you need to accomplish and the bigger picture. Remind yourself why you do what you do. You will find that this makes it easier to remember things throughout the day and you do not need to keep quite the eye on your agenda and schedule. You will also find yourself less sluggish in doing tasks throughout the rest of the day. Scientists studying yoga at Harvard University have found proof that there are physiological benefits to meditating.
