Classroom Questioning Strategies

Superior Essays
It is my belief that teachers use questioning strategies for a variety of reasons. Some of those reasons include reviewing previous lessons, actively involving students in the lesson, assessing mastery of the goals and objectives, and helping them develop critical thinking skills. When I taught my first lesson in the classroom I felt that using questioning strategies enhanced the lesson material. When I used questions that seem to focus on important elements of the lesson it helped the student to better understand the material being presented. Today as I observed my mentor teacher’s questioning strategies I noticed many great ideas that I liked. This week we have been working on comparing and contrasting two different text passages that are about the same subject. We have been finding out many different facts about spiders and listing them on Venn Diagrams showing which facts are contained in both texts and which facts are only contained in one text or the other. I have learned much more about spiders than I really wanted …show more content…
She asked the question, “What is the most interesting fact that you learned about spiders?” Instead of just calling on a few students to answer this question, first she had all the students think about their answer. Then she asked the students facing the clock to share their answer with their face partner. After that she had the students facing the window to share their answer with their face partner. Lastly, she called on a few students to share the fact about spiders that they found most interesting with the class. I actually used this strategy in my lesson that I taught as well and it is fun to see the entire class engaged in a discussion. This gives all the students a chance to share their ideas and not just the few that the teacher may choose to call on. I must admit that at times I am completely amazed at the intelligent answers that the students come up with. Children never cease to amaze

Linda, I used a problem solving technique to instigate the discussion with statements aimed at discovering solutions. Besides these, in class discussion, we talked about the instructional leadership approaches by Glickman. Problem solving by “requesting the learners and teachers jointly engage in the processes of discovering and developing new strategies.” (Textbook: p59) This is regarded as a collaborative interpersonal approach.…

On December 3rd, Mrs. Neth allowed an observation of her second grade class. Mrs. Neth teaches at Heber Hunt elementary in Sedalia. At the beginning of the observation, Mrs. Neth’s second grade class gathered at the carpet to talk about what the students read on the previous day. The students were required to read a two page passage and a story out of their textbook; both were about jellyfish. Mrs. Neth began a picture walk while the students were still sitting at the carpet.…

In the article, “Uncovering Student’s Concept of Matter”, author Paige Keeley discusses the importance of helping students understand the concepts of matter. Keeley states that while children form their own concepts of matter at an early age, they still need assistance on the harder more abstract concepts. There were three main strengths that I found in the article: first the teacher must listen to the students and their ideas concerning matter, then the teacher should provide students examples of different types of matter and gather their feedback on those and lastly remind the students to use the different types of evidence to show that matter exists. The reason I chose listening to the students as a strength is because I feel that it is important to see what the students already know so that you know where to start in teaching them.…

Walking into Kekionga Middle School I noticed a lot of differences from schools that I had visited previously. The most visible one being the school’s population and location. I had never observed at an urban school and have never felt such a cultural difference between me and the students. With a school population that was so diverse and not within the same background as I was, I immediately started thinking about my future teaching career and what I would do in that kind of atmosphere. I later on asked Mrs. Parker why she chose this school and said that it was because she went to Fort Wayne Community Schools all of her life, so she did not feel change at all.…

On Monday, during the third period, I observed a read-aloud lesson. After the teacher wrote the title of the book, she called the students over to the meeting area. Prior to the read aloud, the teacher set strict expectations for the students. For instance, the teacher advised the students that they had to remain seated “Criss-Crossed Applesauce” and raised their hands if they had a question or a comment about the reading. Otherwise, they had to sit calm and quiet.…

If it were from sitting in accounting class, or learning to shoot a bow, if I don’t ask questions and understand why something has to be the way it is, I am more likely to forget and possibly make what seems to be a small mistake which has a large impact in the end. With this “dialogue” the student is more engaged in learning and has a better understanding of what is being taught. “The students—no longer docile listeners—are…

These questionings skills instill the habit in students of looking at multiple perspectives and the various facts. Questioning allows students to expand their minds and they have to really explore all options before making a decision. Having these questioning skills not only aids in learning about controversial or tricky content, such as the decision to drop the atomic bomb, but it also sets students up to get in a good practice of looking beyond the one-sided…

When it comes to assessment during the lectures, there is not much to say. It’s mostly lecturing based on a series of questions he provides to the students at the beginning of each unit. The closest thing to assessment during the lectures is when students either struggle with answering a problem or ask Mr. Crowder a question. Here are some examples that I noted throughout my time in the classroom.…

Having an effective lesson plan should be one of the most important things that every teacher should strive to have. When teachers have an effective lesson plan it provides them with a guide for teaching a lesson. This allows for the least amount of distractions because having a lesson plan keeps teachers on track. It also allows for teachers to track students’ progress. Teachers can also set and achieve goals that they want their child students to learn by writing it down in their lesson plans.…
