Third Semester Practicum

Improved Essays
Observation Reflection On September 30th I had my first formal observation for third semester practicum in Mrs. Bresslers second grade class. During the time of my observation, I did a whole group math warm to practice counting up and down in double digit numbers, using one's. I then sent students back to their desks to start sprints. They had two minutes at a time for sprints. After sprints, I went over an application problem with the class, and I had them do this problem on their own in their math journals. I called students up to share their work and explain their process of solving the problem. I really enjoyed that part, I was able to see how students thought differently and it was fun to see how eager they were to share their work.

Polly showed understanding, so the lesson was extended by introducing another tens frame to challenge her understanding (Department of Education, 2013). For example she was asked” how many counters would fit into these two frames”. Polly answered twenty correctly without counting each box. She confidently made numbers in the teens and removed the counters correctly when asked to show various lower numbers. Two tens frames were used (see appendix 1) to represent two different groups such as “ten and two make…

What did you learn about teaching from this activity? I noticed that students will listen when you layout what you we will be doing in the group beforehand and set sort of an agenda so that they students know what to anticipate during the small group activity. Also, I learned that it is okay to read with the students and participate in the activity myself, rather than just watch and be the teacher.…

Reviewing my pre-instructional assessment/inquiry that I took the first class meeting, I am able to better fully judge the extent of my learning throughout the semester. One major contribution to this learning was how much I have grown in my multicultural competence due to working collaboratively with my two partners. The collaborative partnership that was created pushed my thinking and my learning further then if I was learning the information on my own. One specific example of my growth and breaking out of my own encapsulation was when discussing culturally diverse students in special education. While possessing a background working with special education students and now currently serving as an administrator in an alternative education…

Knowledge Throughout this practicum experience I gained many insights into classroom management, organization and instructional strategies. I would like to begin with classroom management, my facilitating teacher utilized the clip system and reward ticket system in her classroom. While the clip system is an excellent system in theory the success of it can be determined by how the teacher utilizes it. While in the field I found the clip system to be more of a threat to be leveraged against students.…

One question the teacher asked was for the last student to find his spot on the carpet. After he complied, the teacher instructed all the other students to say good job on finding your spot. I think being recognized individually for listening to the teacher, but also having the students say good job can promote positive self-esteem in the public or private school system. Circle time was the most engaging activity for the students. First, I watched the teacher lead them in a song about colored eggs because Easter is coming up.…

1.) The two in class practices that impacted me greatly were Class 7: the introduction to sensation, where we practiced balance poses and in class 8 where we learned twists. In class 7, during the introduction to sensation mentally I learned to take time to pause when things become overwhelming in my life. I suffer from anxiety and depression and often my mind can go on and on, causing doubts within me and questions in my purpose. Physically pausing in class was something I wasn’t familiar with. Pausing in class and getting into meditation and learning to breathe and focus on the sensations, connecting with the silence of the room and directing my energy to the sensations around me in the present gave me insight as to how I’ve never been the…

In preparation for fractions number talk what I observed was very beneficial for students at the carpet it allowed students to discuss and share with one another. I liked the fact that after a student share students had to give a particular cue saying if they agreed with peer. I thought that was awesome. I also like how she went over what to expect during learning at table and how students will share. So some type of feedback was to be expected even if student did not still quite understand.…
