The CEO was not always the management leader over our team and for a while our CEO lived out of the state. A few years ago we had a CFO who took on the role as office manager. He was brilliant with finances, but struggled with the management role and was unsure of how to manage a team and lead them to success. Instead of distinguishing leaders from managers, we should be seeing managers as leaders, and leadership as management practiced well (Mintzberg, 2013). Just because someone is in a leadership role doesn’t necessarily mean they should be required to take on a management role. I think as a small team, we can lean on each other and support one another in ways many other business teams can’t. I enjoy being my own manager and an expert in my field, but while being my own manager is a blessing, it is also a curse. Taking PTO, sick days, or any vacation time is very difficult. Since I am the only person running customer support, finding another employee to take on my tasks while I am away is a bit of a headache. One way to resolve this would be if we could cross train within our company. If someone could learn my position and I could learn theirs, I truly believe that would help cut down on the stress that comes with worrying about whether or not work will get completed while away on vacation.
Change in management can be scary when it is unexpected and when a new business model is proposed. This change in management was for the better and has truly helped the growth of this company. I am excited in my current position to continue learning more about the business world and how to be a remaining force contributing to a successful
