The Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, located on Chicago’s North Side, is one of the state’s largest, most comprehensive nonprofit medical centers. The core mission of the Advocate Illinois Medical Center is to “provide patients the highest quality care in Chicagoland, as illustrated by their many honors, including being named a 100 Top Hospital by Truven Health Analytics for five consecutive years.”

Leaders show directions, influence and inspire followers, motivate other people to achieve organizational goals. Management is defined as the process of dealing with people to get things done. Generally, managers focus on organizing and allocating resources to move towards an organizational goal. Although some activities might fall into both categories, leadership and management are different in many ways. Leaders focus on bigger picture than managers; for example, leaders look for ways to change an industry or global picture, while managers look at the ways to improve an organization’s goals. Managers deal with solving specific problems within an organization through systems and structures while leaders deal with principles and solving the issue as a holistic approach. What drives their thinking and motivations? Are health care leaders and physicians aligned?
Physicians and health care leaders differ in many ways. Normally, physicians are focused on providing care to patients and following procedures and policies as they are set by government or leaders. Health care leaders are focused on overall policies and conditions of health care industry. Leaders are motivated by their beliefs on making a difference in larger group of people by working towards policy making. Physicians are motivated to save lives and make a difference in individuals that need attention on the individual basis.
Sometimes health care leaders and physicians may have common interests so they might align. But sometimes their interest may not be the same. Physician alignment refers to collaboration between physicians and their medical groups to accomplish common goals. They might not be aware of issues outside their hospitals and medical groups while health care leaders are supposed to consider all the medical groups and hospitals as well as other health related organizations together.
