Dov Charney's Management Of American Apparel

Once a praised and honored CEO for American Apparel, Dov Charney is now considered a very questionable and scandalous leader in the clothing industry. Charney started the company to provide shirts to screen printers and wholesale clothiers within North America. However, Charney came up with the design called “Classic Girl”, a tight-fitting t-shirt rather than baggy, that took and allowed the company to grow tremendously. However, after texts were released showing sexual harassment and sexting with employees, he was quickly dismissed from his CEO position. Business Insider recognized him for being one of the most brilliant people in the business world. He was extremely efficient by coming up with the idea of putting clothing scraps to use for making articles like underwear, bikinis, and cords for hoodies. This increased revenue at very low-cost because they didn’t have to purchase any extra materials. Dov also made sure that all his products were the highest of quality, trying on shirts as well as new underwear designs, giving his thoughts and critiques to the designers to make sure it was the highest of quality. He paid his workers higher wages than most factory workers, as well offering low-cost healthcare and fighting for immigration reform. The latter made a huge impact on plenty of his workers as discussed before because he hired some illegal immigrants. One technique that Dov used was putting real people, not true models, in his advertisements. This inspired normal people and consumers to wear his clothing and look good. Charney even made sure to let every employee have his cell phone number (possibly for other reasons which will be discussed later) to reach him if they had any problems. American Apparel even provided free massages for their factory workers, keeping morale up. These techniques inspired employees to work for a leader like Dov Charney.
