However this is not the case. In fact it has been proven that in places where guns have been taken away violence has actually increased. For example the United Kingdom enacted a ban on handguns in 1996. Before the ban on handguns the country saw their homicides at around 10 to 13 per million people. After they enacted their ban they saw a jump in homicides until the rate of homicides reached its peak at 18 per million people in 2003 (King 1). It is a startling fact that the homicide rates went up because law abiding citizens would not have been able to obtain or own any handguns during this time period so the number of guns in the country went down. This shows that people who are legally obtaining the firearms are not the issue and causing the violence. The people that are causing the problems are the ones that are obtaining their guns illegally. This fact is important because in the United States the number of guns has been increasing while the number of shootings has not been increasing. If a law like that law passed in the UK would be passed in the United States the number of homicides would jump dramatically like the study from the UK showed. The statistics from the UK show that taking away guns does not reduce the amount of violence. It can in fact increase the shootings in an area. To stop some of the gun violence that occurs guns need to be taken away from criminals and mentally ill people. In the UK the only people who could have gotten guns would be people who were breaking the law by not registering their guns or buying them from an illegal gun
