Have the shootings in America gone too far? Even sending children to school isn't safe anymore. The United States is one of the top countries with the most public shootings and that needs to stop now! According to the University of Alabama, 31% of public mass shootings happen in America alone. “Gun control is set by laws or policies regulating sales, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms by civilians” (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives). Gun control is necessary for the United States now because it will prevent more public shootings, and suicide and accidental shootings; however, there are simple solutions to prevent guns from getting to the mentally ill and unstable people.

Between 1999 and 2013 there were over 464,033 total deaths in the U.S. due to guns with a percent of 58.2% for suicides and 37.7% homicides. (Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted) 50% of firearm deaths that were unintentional were caused by family members or friends or were self-inflicted.(Gun control) If there was as little as more child control locks these deaths would be reduced. 89% of accidental child firearm deaths happen when children are playing with a loaded gun and their parents are not around. If there was a heavier background check on medical records it could reduce the number of suicides and the chances of guns getting to the mentally ill. Also, if there are no guns there are no shootings. In 1981 2/3rds of the 7,900 deaths involving arguments were caused by guns. It makes conflict more likely to become violent when there is a presence of a gun. In 2013, the FBI found that arguments remoted with drugs and money resulted in 1,962 firearm deaths. (Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted) More gun control and heavier background checks are needed to protect women from domestic violence. Every day five women are murdered due to gun violence in America. According to (Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted) “86% of women killed by firearms were in the U.S. and American women are 11.4 times more likely to be victims of a gun homicide”. Both Finland and Switzerland require criminal and mental health records and many more restrictions.
