Character Compass- Where does yours point?

As I Reflect on the various components of Character education, I believe and understand why they are important. They make us powerful people with a voice, I have learned that they all have more than one meaning and they carry a positive and strong message. As an educator the area I would emphasis more is performance character. Performance Character gives students the ability to make a change to better themselves. Performance character is becoming the best you can be “ it can be defined as the qualities necessary to achieve one’s potential in endeavors ranging from art to academics to athletics” (Seiders 2012 pg.2). It also gives them the ability so reflect on the person who they are now and set a goal to be the person they want to become. Before reflecting on what they want to improve I must also be able to reward them for positive work they have achieved so far “ the qualities such as efforts, diligence, perserverance, a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, ingenuity, and self –discipline needed to realize one’s potential for excellence in academics, co-curricular activities, the workplace, or any other area of endeavor (Seiders 2012. Pg258). Being rewarded for the positive work you have achieved is important, just like at Roxbury Prep when their students get awarded with the spirit stick. Character education such as Character performance will help my students expand their self esteem, they will be able to trust people a lot easier, and their curiosity in life will expand “ Character strengths such as empathy, …show more content…
While combining my students Performance Character and Civic Character I will empower them to become successful outspoken leaders. Most importantly they will become empathetic towards others. My plan for the upcoming months is to be able to have monthly Character meeting with my students and discuss issues that are happening within their community or issues that are happening with them. I would also have office hours if any of my students would like to speak privately with me. During these meeting we can discuss our team goal, discuss their personal goals. In order for me to help my students achieve their goals I would create a rubric for example, just like at Pacific Rim, Ms. Rossing has meeting with her students and they are able to talk and reflect on what they have done and achieved. They are able to have these discussions by following the Kaizen rubric questions one example of the question is “Did students speak respectfully to one another and their teacher?”(Seiders 2012. Pg.165). Being able to have open discussion with my students will definitely have a positive impact because students will have to follow the rubric and they will respect one another “The Moral aspects, besides enabling us to treat each other with fairness, respect, and care, ensure that we pursue our performance goals in ethical rather than
