Diversity And Conformity

Empathy, courage, tenacity, and discipline are all defining character traits that make us who we are. An individual's character speaks volumes for what they are doing, and what they will accomplish throughout their lives. Therefore, I feel it is only appropriate to discuss one of the strongest aspects of my character—my fervent drive to seek and encourage diversity in my community through leadership and volunteering. Through diversity, we can all work together to make the world a better place. One of my worst fears in life is finding myself comfortable in conformity. If we all become the same, there is nothing left to learn from one another. Striving everyday to make progress towards learning and growing into a better person, scholar, and leader is immensely important to me. I make conscious choices in my life to unearth and talk with people from all different walks of life in order to better understand their perspective. For example, I have volunteered for two years at a local LGBTQ+ pride festival, a local elementary school, and a local community beautification program. I also completed a fellowship during the fall election season of 2016 with the North Carolina Coordinated Campaign and I managed the yearbook staff of my high school as a photo editor.
