In "The Danger of Telling Poor Kids That College Is the Key to Social Mobility" posted on The Atlantic on January 16, 2014, writer and teacher Andrew Simmons states his thoughts and ideas about higher education to the impoverished population and why it isn 't for poor kids. He recently had a high school student write an essay about what she wants to do with her future. She had been told, rather preached to, that if she, "made good grades and a ticket to a good college would lead to a good job, one that would guarantee her financial independence"(para. 2). He acknowledges the fact that "they don 't mean to suggest that there is no other point to higher education" (para 3), but he also argues the fact that they are told to go to college it 'll…
James Loewen in “Land of Opportunity,” writes that social class America determines the quality of education students received. As he points out, affluent students obtained a higher education while lower class students obtains a lesser education. Similarly, Jonathan Kozol in “Still Separate, Still Unequal: America’s Educational Apartheid” explains that the education is not equal, but rather determined by socioeconomic factors for students in rural areas and inner-city schools. In today’s modern culture, an education is the key to better opportunities if one is determined to succeed. However, the educational system of this country disproportionally treats students by socioeconomic status.…

However, with the skyrocketing cost of a college education, the chance for students to get better education become even harder. The rich and poor are the separate but unequal groups that have existed since one cave man had two more rocks than the other. This inequality has also plagued the American educational system until Brown v. Board when children were integrated but this change self-reversed semi naturally over time due to the varying quantities of money invested in individual schools of the same region. From highly populated cities author Kozol has provided many statistics in his piece Still Separate, Still Unequal: America’s Apartheid of racial demographics in comparison to the budget of each school which allows the reader to draw the conclusion that is in union with Barbara Ehrenreich's statement that “poverty is a shortage of money” (Ehrenreich 609), and this shortage of money means families at a financial disadvantage cannot invest in their children's education leading to differences in education. These authors present the problems both in poverty and how the educational system is being effected. By shifting the “culture of poverty” mindset children would be more integrated which would eliminate the segregation in big city schools as shown by…
Education plays a vital role in our society. Without it, the success and development of many countries would be nonexistent. Due to education, people can understand the difference between right and wrong, and they are able to create equal standards of many things, such as living, throughout the nation. This theory, however, is why Frederick Douglass was unable to openly and easily obtain the education that should should have been available from the very start. The racist society that he was forced to live in forbade him from earning an education whilst the same society enforced the education of Benjamin Franklin.…
In “Against School: How Public Education Cripples Our Kids, and Why,” John Taylor Gatto discuss how schools are just a prison for children to dumb them down and destroy any possible for geniuses to be created. In “Dude, Where’s My Job?” Walter Benn Michaels discusses that the social standing of our student determine how high the degree we can puress. In "The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society" Jonathan Kozol explains the problems and difficulties that the illiterates in our society have today. Education is precious and wanting that knowledge is the first step to gaining it.…
Due to the industrial revolution, the gap between the rich and the poor was very large and that impacted education because the rich get to have access to education while the poors are being left out. Horace Mann argued that in “Twelfth Annual Report to the Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education”, he says that the only the rich have access while the others are being left out which caused…
In schools, the students from higher-income families have better opportunities to succeed. The students from lower class families don’t have near as many of these opportunities and end up falling behind the higher-income students(Priester). Without these chances to get a good education, the jobs and other career opportunities become slim to none for the lower class compared to the chances the higher-income people receive. The different trajectories these two groups of people are sent on at the start of their lives cause each of them to receive different benefits and hindrances throughout their lives. The income gap between the two classes is a direct cause of these different opportunities that the two classes receive, which causes the lower class to get lower paying jobs and fewer opportunities for growth.…
Unfortunately, in many circumstances, children that come from poverty also lack education. Children living in poverty have a higher number of absences or drop-out all together because they are more likely to have to work to help their family. “Dropout rates of 16 to 24-year-old students who come from low income families are seven times more likely to drop out than those from families with higher incomes.” (“11 Facts about education and poverty in America,” n.d.) A child who lacks education or who comes from an uneducated family is more likely to have health complications.…

Education is important although it can be expensive it’s worth it. The essay” Yes, A College Education is Worth the Cost” written by Rodney K. Smith, is another example of why investing in education pays off at the end. Sometimes students think education is boring or hard to get. Other times individual think they just waste too much money and don’t see anything in return, but once they are done they become thankful and proud that they did it.…
American Dream Synthesis Essay The American Dream, or the idea that each American has an equal opportunity at success, is becoming untrue as certain people who are able to achieve higher education through financial abundance or are American-born have an unfair advantage compared to less wealthy immigrant citizens. People who have not received higher education, such as college, have a much diminished chance at achieving the American Dream. In today’s society, being unable to attend college leads to having minimal career choices. In reality, this is highly unfair, as people become practically forced into a job they do not want just because they can not pay to get into a university.…
Essy Lamb Intro to Sociology Dr. Castro “Gang Leader for a Day” Course Paper Education and poverty are inversely correlated. Venkatesh has several conversations with different people about education verses poverty. In one conversation, he is talking to Mrs. Bailey.…
Lack of education is one of the predominant issues that contribute to poverty in the United States. Without high-quality education, individuals are not qualified for most jobs. Some children have access to better education and resources that put them at an advantage. For example, a child that goes to a first-class private school and has an after school tutor is going to be more educated than another child who goes to an underfunded inner-city school that does not have enough books or school supplies. The first child is given the tools to have success in life while the second child in left behind.…
