The knuckleball has arrived with a bang to the game of baseball, but most people do not know the knuckleball has been thrown for a long time in Major League Baseball. This is also a tool to draw the reader’s attention. The next three to four paragraphs are used to show the actual account of steroids being used in professional baseball dating all the way back from the early 1960s to present day. He provides examples that show the use of steroids or some form of performance enhancements have been around since the inception of baseball. The author cites players in the past such as Roger Marris, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, and Sandy Koufax. This list has continued to grow exponentially throughout the existence of baseball.…
Abner Doubleday invented the game known as baseball in Cooperstown, New York, during the summer of 1839. At least that is the myth that was told doubleday was actually a civil war hero not the inventor of baseball. Baseball was actually a mixture of cricket and a game called rounders, brought here by early New England colonists. It started out as just a game played in school yards and on college campuses, then in the mid-19 century it became popular in industrialized cities were young men sought work. In 1845 a group of New York city men founded the Knickerbocker baseball club.…
The arm is the most fascinating piece of equipment in all of sports. This is especially true in baseball, where a fairly recent epidemic of arm injuries in major leaguers, minor leaguers, and kids has hit the sport extremely hard. Eager to find the causes behind the uprising in arm injuries and a way to solve the problem, Jeff Passan went on a three year journey across the United States and abroad. His book, simply titled The Arm, compiles events from the trip and takes a look at possible causes of the surge of injuries. In addition to pitchers discussed in the book, Passan followed around two pitchers who were trying to come back from Tommy John surgery, the procedure used to replace the UCL, the ligament in the elbow which has stress put on it in the action of throwing.…
It was a hot May night in Denver Colorado, when Troy Tulowitzki stepped to the plate. Regarded as one of the most prolific hitters in the MLB, Tulowitzki was already 3 for 3 with a home run. It was a 2-1 count with one out in the 8th, when Tulowitz made contact. The ball soared into the right field stands at Coors Field. On a hot day more than a mile above sea level, Tulowitzki had one of the beds gsmes for an MLB player all year.…
Drug use is a problem in every sport, but no sport compares to baseball. In a game where home-runs bring in the money, players usually do whatever it takes to get an edge. This includes taking performance-enhancing drugs that cause many health issues and permanently damage the body. The Steroid Era saved Major League Baseball because of increased attendance to games and income due to home-runs.…
Professional baseball players have been idolized since its introduction into society. Men like George (Babe) Ruth, Jackie Robinson, and Lou Gehrig have been viewed as role models who possess superhuman traits. This view has been tainted by one simple factor in modern society. Performance-enhancing drugs have spurred a large epidemic of abuse and illegal use which has women into the fabric of our most beloved pastime. These drugs have now taken away the beauty and glory of natural talent and hard work.…
Impact of Steroids Steroids are taken all over the world. Some steroids are given by doctors for medical purposes but some people, such as MLB players take steroids to gain an advantage over their competition. Steroids have been a problem in baseball ever since players have started using them as performance enhancers. Taking steroids as performance enhancers has been a problem for a while; back in the early days, Players used testosterone supplement that came from animal testicals (Carise). Taking steroids was not against the rules by any means when they were first introduced in baseball, infact, baseball banned the substance and any other performing enhancement drug in 1991.…
The use of steroids, also known as performance enhancing drugs (PEDs), in baseball has been illegal in Major League Baseball since 1991, even though they did not start league wide testing until 2003. And even though they are outlawed, many still use steroids and get away with it. This gives them an unfair advantage and if not used properly can ruin not only their careers, but their lives. I believe that steroids should become legal in the MLB to level the playing field. Many people cheat and get away with it, while others get suspended and fined for using.…
Amphetamines are drugs that help to increase alertness, awareness, and energy. This drug is illegal without a prescription, but would be used, as prescribed by a doctor, to treat things like ADD(Attention Deficit Disorder), which some MLB players actually suffer from. One MLB player, Chris Davis, was suspended for 25 games for using Amphetamines. Davis suffers from ADD, and this most likely helped him to focus on baseball when his mind would have otherwise been wandering. He said that he had a doctor's note for the supplement in the past, but did not have one then.…
A lot of people ask for more of an edge in baseball that is why I think PHD or steroids could benefit to the game. People nowadays have them prescribed to them by doctors which are the same level of doctors that treat MLB players so why should any level of baseball stop the players from using them because it will give everyone that little extra edge in baseball that people ask…
The answer is probably not, if they're trying to make the game fun to watch such as basebal one of the slowest sports in existence, why stop them. Pro athletes have the same rights as we do, so why put them to a standard where they can't do this or they can't do that(Perez,n.d) Also Athletes on steroids can make the game way more exciting and fast. Which as a sports fan that's everything they should want in a sport. It would make the game more exciting by more points being scored, bigger hits, and lots more home runs.…
As I walked into the stadium, the smell of hotdogs and popcorn filled the air. It was a familiar setting. A setting I had grown to know very well because my dad loved baseball. The red white and blue colors were everywhere as fans came from every direction into the stadium. My dad and I walked to the outfield where the opposing team was warming up for the game.…
