The hitter is most affected by the sporadic pitch. Most hitters have the mindset of hitting the fastball and adjusting to a breaking ball. The zig-zag movement of the knuckleball totally throws off a hitter. Adding a third type of pitch to the situation makes hitters feel more unsure about their approach to the plate. The MLB’s all-time hits leader Pete Rose said “I work for three weeks to get my swing down pat and Phil messes it up in one night. Trying to hit that thing is a miserable way to make a living”, about hitting a knuckleball (Nowlin). A knuckleball has the ability to make even the best hitters look silly at the plate. The knuckleball also changes the mindset of the catcher behind the plate. Bob Uecher, former catcher for Phil and Joe Niekro, said “Wait’ll it stops rolling, then go pick it up”, about trying to catch a good knuckleball (Nowlin). The shake of a knuckleball completely disrupts the hand-eye coordination used to catch a ball. The last second movement could cause the catcher completely miss the ball (Memmot). Normally, teams have a dedicated knuckleball catcher if their team has a knuckleball pitcher. That catcher is the only one who catches those

“I loved baseball for a while, then wasn’t so sure, then loved it again” (Ankiel 1). In just one sentence of the Autobiography, The Phenomenon, Rick Ankiel described the many difficulties that came along his route to success. Why were black people segregated from baseball? Today many of the legends and greats we think of were African Americans, and it’s crazy to think they were excluded from the MLB just sixty years ago. They were segregated from anything you can think of at the time, and sports weren’t excluded. Baseball is not the game that you thought it was. It has not been since 1973 when the first designated hitter was used. A designated hitter does not play defense, their one and only job is to hit for the pitcher. It has made the game stray away from its roots. Many say the designated hitter has improved baseball by making it more entertaining but in reality these players are ruining the sanctity of the game because they do not follow the same rules that all of the other players have to follow.…

As I passed through downtown Atlanta, I couldn't help admire the home of the Braves, not just because it was an architectural wonder but because it brought back to mind that very first lesson when Professor Van Huevelen sparked my curiosity when he said we find that there are some things in this world that are repeatable. Repeatable. Repeatable. So a baseball pitcher, if he throws a ball with the same speed and in the same direction, spinning the ball the same, it'll end up going about the same place.…
