St. Francis is the patron saint of animals and merchants. He is a very influential saint and he is one of the most recognizable out of the rest of the saints. So what intrigued St. Francis to leave his life of partying and wealth to go into a life of poverty to help animals and the less fortunate around him?
He was born in 1181. He was born to a wealthy family. His father was a cloth merchant and was the main source of income for his family. He was renowned in his youth for irresponsibly drinking and partying. In 1202, war broke between Assisi and Perugia. Francis joined in with the cavalry of Assisi. Little did he know at the time, his experience with war would change him forever. While he was at war he was captured, during his time in prison

Franciscans refers to religious orders who adhere to the teachings and spiritual disciplines of Saint Francis of Assisi. The original movement, the Order of Friars Minor, was established by Saint Francis, and has produced several related orders and movements within the Catholic Church. Orders adhering to Franciscan spirituality also exists within other Christian denominations, including Old Catholicism, Anglicanism, and Lutheranism.
He was a simple man. He pursued simplicity. This does not mean that he was lacking intellect, it means that he was successful at eliminating everything from his life that did not enhance his understanding and love of Jesus. He is easily comparable to St. Gerard Majella as she had, as well as Francis, a deep compassion for animals, she even had the ability to communicate with animals.
I admire St. Francis for his humility and for his love for the people around him, he loved them so much he gave everything he had to help them. Many people, especially now a days could not give up a life of wealth, even if they hadn't earned it, to help the poor. St. Francis listened to God's calling and gave up his rambunctious life. Which shows great

Francis continued to grow spiritually and felt a calling of going out and spreading the word of the Lord to continue his habits of following the lord. If it weren't for Francis’s ability to stand to his virtues, he would not have made such an impact on the world like he has. Now he had a lot of virtues and I can’t even think of a vice that he had in his later days. Some of the good habits that allowed for him to do such good was following one of God’s most important laws; Loving everyone. Francis treated each person and all of creation as if they were all gifts from God above.…

It was tragic to hear the stories of Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, and the countless other victims of “America’s war on the vulnerable.” My heart dropped when I was reading Darren Wilson’s testimony.…
