Students going through the process of reading and writing have the essential capability of being able to use different approaches on how to successfully be ready for college level courses. Even though it is known that students can approach writing in a successful manner they are not taught how to take it as an advantage. High school students are told to read and write but they are not encouraged to use “Habits of Mind” where a student will lack the ability to fully engage in the assignment. With all the habits that a person possess such as curiosity, openness, engagement, creativity, persistence, responsibility, flexibility, and metacognition as stated in Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing a student can take on most challenges that come with reading and writing in the college level.
Knowing that these habits are there to help make writing easier make it a great way to reference and be better prepared for entering college. Reading from this excerpt allows an understanding as to what someone as a person can do to make writing much simpler and still have successful writing skills. With “Habits of Mind” a student’s writing will show how lively they approach a topic but when in high school a student has yet to use all these habits. In high school students are taught to approach a topic with curiosity and creativity; many students can achieve this but the problem would be that they have not used all other important strategies.
