Habit Of Mind Analysis

Improved Essays
The habit of mind that I believe I made the most progress in this semester is, written communication. Written communication is an effective writer who effectively persuades, fixes their message to the audience, can examine and convey complex ideas, produces clear and coherent writing, plans, revises, and edits. An example of my work which has written communication was the Zheng He essay. I was an effective writer during the introduction paragraph because I produced clear and coherent writing. Such as, “Zheng He should be celebrated in Chinese civilization because he sailed greater distances than anyone else during his time, and he managed large ship sizes while also maintaining huge amount of boats and crewman.” This quote proves that I produced …show more content…
That habit of mind is independence. Independence is an independent learner who takes on the next challenge, learns from mistakes, motivated by feedback, makes effective effort, enjoys practice, sticks to an idea, takes risks, and asks specific questions when needed. An example of my work which lacks independence was the Africa map quiz. I lacked independence when I was coloring the deserts on the front side. I lacked independence because I did not take risks and asked the people next to me what they colored in. Since I asked them what they got, I did not feel confident in my own answer, and one key to an independent learner is taking risks. Another example of my work in which I was not an independent learner in was the Ancient and Medieval China exam. I lacked independence during my reaction after the exam. I was not an independent learner because I was not motivated by the feedback I received after I took the exam. I was not motivated to keep going on with the subject and take on the next challenge. This makes me not an independent learner because being motivated by feedback and taking on the next challenge are key points to being independent. Lastly, another example of my work in which I lacked independence was the identity vocabulary quiz. I was not independent by not feeling confident in my answer about how Hudson meets the criteria of a civilization. By not being confident, I was not taking risks. Also, I changed my answer so many times, I could not stick to an idea. This makes me not an independent learner because, to be an independent learner, you must stick to an idea and take risks, and I did not do that. Therefore, this is why the the habit of mind I most need to improve in is, independence. I am glad that I took the time to see which habit of mind I did not improve over the school year because to improve, you must know your

In reading Dweck’s research involving the two basic mindsets that shape our lives, I believe I fall into the fixed mindset majority of the time. One example of this is academically. I refrain from making hasty decisions, a trait that’s made it easier to manage time and keep my life organized. It’s not that I don’t enjoy some spontaneity, just that I’ve had experience with faulty planning. I like to consider as many details and possible outcomes of a situation before making a decision; in fact, I believe it’s my best characteristic. Thinking things through allows me to make sound, satisfying choices in both my academic and social life. It is a practice that has saved me from careless mistakes on math tests and kept my activities.…

The barrier language that I have between Hmong and English is what makes my writing difficult to understand from the start of the school year, not only that, but also just me trying to throughly write an explanation of what I have thought of in mind. Sometimes it doesn’t come out on the paper as I have, have in my thoughts. Which in return create flaws in my level one, two, or three writing paper that affect my writing skills. The flaws that I have slightly improve on my writing: create a clear and stronger thesis statement, subject- verb agreement, and transitioning. Constructing a firm claim and allowing the reader to be able to identify which position I’ve take through my writing by creating a rough draft of what I am going to say in…

It is often questioned what level of independence one should take in relation to society, government, and the influence or aid of others. Achieving a level of independence, the ability to stand on your own, is a key area of accepting responsibility for oneself. Individuals should have total free will if they are capable of taking care of themselves. Independence is for the ones who can depend on themselves to get by, but the actions of individuals should only be limited to prevent harm to others. In other words, a person should be able to do whatever they want as long as his or her actions do not harm others.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
