My Path to Literacy

For a very long time writing and reading was a huge struggle for me. I was one of those students who was very intelligent, but disliked reading tremendously and was often told, “You write the way you talk”. The older I grew the more I realized that my struggles with writing was due to my lack of reading. I was aware of my issues but because it became a part of my writing habits it was hard to adapt to anything different. I wanted to be like everyone else and be a good authentic and productive writer but it seemed almost impossible. It wasn’t until my junior year in high school when writing became less of a struggle for me. The day I stepped foot in my English 4 class I knew that year was going to be the worst year ever,

She knew I hated reading so she often made me read out loud in class. Sometimes I thought she was doing things to get under my skin on purpose, but she was only trying to help me. Eventually we built that student/teacher relationship. When I wrote terrible papers she would give me ideas to improve it and make me rewrite it. She was a teacher that made me write and expand my mind. She taught me not only how to be an authentic and productive writer but also how to analyze and think critically about things. Everything she taught me helped a lot, not only in her class but it also prepared me for college courses I have taken here at Francis Marion University since …show more content…
Jones. In so many ways she reminded me of Ms. Kelly. Not just because they are both women but because their techniques for writing was alike in so many ways. I thought I was retaking English 4 in high school all over again. Like Ms. Kelly, Dr. Jones saw my potential and she used that to motivate me. My worst paper was writing a critique on the film “Kramer vs. Kramer”. When I wrote the draft for that paper I thought it was perfect but I was wrong. She gave it back and I rewrote it three times before it was the perfect English paper I ever wrote. Each time I went to her to talk about the mistakes I made, she helped me and gave me ways to improve my

“People don 't realize how a man 's whole life can be changed by one book” (Malcolm X). Books are beneficial in an individual’s vocabulary, memorization, and perspectives in life. In “On Being 17, Bright, and Unable to Read” by David Raymond, Hunger of Memory by Richard Rodriguez, and “My Alma Mater” from The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X, all the authors struggled with something particular in literacy, but they all had different motives for improving their reading and writing. As seen in the three articles, each author had their own purpose in why literacy can be a good advantage and figured out different strategies to help ameliorate themselves. If you have obstacles which prevent you from reading or writing effectively, finding…

It’s interesting, really, to see some of my old papers from middle and high school. I look back and laugh at the time, maybe around the third grade, when my classmates and I would groan and complain about having to write an ENTIRE PARAGRAPH. Now, after years of writing significantly longer academic papers that stretch far beyond a simple paragraph, my style and the depth of my topics have evolved based on what I’ve read. The most important pastime for anyone who wishes to write, unsurprisingly, is to read a wide variety of material, starting at a young age. Studies have shown that children who read more than their peers exhibit a larger vocabulary as well as more complex writing styles.…

I first came in contact with LaCameria Clark when I become a teacher assistant in her eleventh grade English class. We would share the occasional joke and moments of encouragement. One day she asked if I could look over her essay before she turned it in to her teacher. The first essay was not fully developed, however she insisted that I read it and tell her my thoughts. I did exactly that.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
