Implementing Sheltered Instruction
Sheltered Instruction lessons follow several formats; however all of them have similar key elements, such as content and language objectives, ELA (English Language Arts) standards, important vocabulary, concepts to be taught and consideration of background knowledge, time for practice, and assessment strategies to check for learning.
It is important that teachers consider appropriate and necessary standards in their lessons. According to the Common Core State Standards Initiative (2017), “the ELA standards promote the literacy skills and concepts required for college and career readiness in multiple disciplines.”
Conclusion
Through Sheltered Instruction and the use of the SIOP® Method lesson plans, ELL teachers set up their students for successful and meaningful learning. Giving students the ability to connect to their background knowledge and practice applying new concepts to their learning, ELL students gain confidence and the ability to transfer their knowledge to what they are expected to learn in their general class
