The article I choose was “Get Organized around Assets” by Larry Ferlazzo. I thought this article was beneficial because he writes about instructional strategies to maximize English Language Learners (ELLs) strengths in reading and higher-level thinking. The author mentions five organizing cycles to help ELLs.
1. Build strong relationships with students
2. Access prior knowledge through stories
3. Help students learn by doing
4. Identify and mentor students leadership potential
5. Promote the habit of reflection
All of these strategies could be great for all students in the class. As a future educator, I will have ELLs in my classrooms so this article will assist me because I can teach my ELLs students skills for reading and higher-level

Some ELLs have a higher English proficiency than others, so it would not be beneficial for them to be working on the same activities. Students get to learn everything from math, sight words, phonics, writing, language, vocabulary, spelling, and various reading activities at their own levels. Multicultural education is also about cultural awareness and social justice (Bennett, 2014). This site offers the opportunity to learn social studies. For example, students learn about the civil rights movement and how Blacks were not allowed to attend White schools.…

During first two years of teaching I went through a two year mentor program and during that time we broke down each domain, sub domain and their components. This gave me a deeper understanding of each domain and their components. During this project I had the opportunbity to delve deeper into two specific components 2d: managing student behavior and 3b: using questioning and discussion techniques. In order to gain a better understanding of these components I unpacked them piece by piece. I then provided strategies which were aligned with the components to my co-teacher.…

Core Psychological Concepts Paper John Seymour EDPS 457 10/14/17 The problem I would like to work on for my CPC paper is concerning ELL students. You are teaching in a public school with a large number of ELL (English Language Learners) in your classroom. When these students are trying to complete reading assignments, they seem to have to translate English words back to the language they speak at home to understand the meaning of a sentence. Because of this, it takes them longer to read and as a result, they sometimes forget what they have read in the previous sentences and find it hard to understand the whole paragraph.…

A few years ago I was asked by my department chair to teach an English Language Development (ELD) class. As I had only been teaching for a year, I was unfamiliar with the full requirements of the class and nervous to take on what I felt was a BIG responsibility. Once I accepted our dean of curriculum asked me to be the ELD advisor. I took two days to decide that with my family background, my grandfather picked fruit for a living and my mom picked and packed growing up, I could make the students understand that working hard in school and continuing their education post high school could help them get more out of life than merely staying at a menial job. My first year was difficult.…

A recommendation I have is to allow more “think time.” Giving the students a journal where they can jot down any questions or ideas they have about a certain topic will help them process information better. The students will later discuss with a group. This is giving each student a chance to talk and interact with other students, while the teacher is the observer. At the end, all the groups will share and the teacher leads a class discussion.…
