Observation of Scott McCandless Reflection #5
When I first started this ten hour practicum project I had very little information, outside of participating in observations, about what it takes to evaluate a teacher. There are so many steps to the evaluation process that it can become over whelming if you are not well versed in; The Danielson framework, scripting, and communication. These are the three areas that I have grown the most in during this project.
When I first started this project I already had some background knowledge of the Danielson Framework. During first two years of teaching I went through a two year mentor program and during that time we broke down each domain, sub domain and their components. This gave me a deeper understanding of each domain and their components. During this project I had the opportunbity to delve deeper into two specific components 2d: managing student behavior and 3b: using questioning and discussion techniques. In order to gain a better understanding of these components I unpacked them piece by piece. I then provided strategies which were aligned with the components to my co-teacher. One example of how I did this is with component 2d. Part of component 2d says “teacher monitoring of student behavior is subtle and preventative” (Danielson pg. 47,

Before I started this project I knew nothing about scripting and thought that it was just note taking. By recognizing my flaws with scripting I was able to make changes in order to make scripting meaningful and unique to me as an

Short Term 12 was a very interesting movie. It had hints of being realistic, but with aspects where you knew it was a movie. It’s about a group of workers who work in a foster care residential facility setting. The main character, Grace, deals with her own personal struggles while she supervises the children at the facility. I have a short bit of experience at a facility like Short Term 12 in some aspects; I can see where parts of the movie are realistic and where are some are an exaggeration because it is a movie.…

If I could change one thing about this artifact, I would change the way I viewed the self-reflections written in my Coaching Journal. Instead of viewing them as an additional requirement, I now view them as a self-correcting tool that aids me in identifying my strengths and weaknesses. This artifact will have an impact on faculty development because it will help Instructional Coaches see the benefits of utilizing assessments. When Instructional Coaches use assessments to identify needs, they can help educators implement the appropriate strategies to improve student learning.…

I can empathize with teachers who say that the observation and evaluation process does not seem reciprocal in nature. Most of my follow-up evaluations have either been waived or conducted in five minutes or less in which the principal hits upon the highlights of my observation. Very few teaching lessons have been learned through these interactions. In her article though, Shelly Arneson includes sound practices that can be implemented to alleviate many of the concerns of the evaluation process. Her basic premise is to shift the dialogue from inspection-based conversation to a reflection-based conversation.…
