Standard #8 - “The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner (Henson, 2009).”
As a teacher it is important to use a variety of assessments to evaluate and ensure that students understand and are learning the content presented in the classroom. In addition to giving traditional assessments such as a quiz, exam or paper, alternatives that will be provided include group assessments, self-assessment, portfolios, observations and performance assessments. By applying varied assessment methods a check for understanding of a student’s knowledge will be better assessed since there are limitations with different types of evaluations.

Demonstrating Flexibility and Responsiveness. “The teacher adjusts instruction based on the needs of the students and in response to ‘teachable moments’ (West Virginia Department of Education, 2010).” In order to demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness a proficient teacher will make minor adjustments to lessons and be able to continue instruction effortlessly. One way that I will be able to demonstrate this element is during an instructional activity that is not working. This becomes apparent when students are unfamiliar with an incident that I am founding an explanation on. I may need to improve the situation by offering an explanation. So, if I am teaching a lesson that seems to be difficult for students to follow I would say to the class, “This topic appears to be more complicated for you than I expected; I will try to discuss the lesson another way.” Backing up and explaining a topic differently demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness. Therefore, revising the execution of a lesson to suit the needs of the students is part of the teacher’s instructional strategies and would be performed by altering the
